Does anyone know the name of the emergency photo I.D. you can get from the guards to use in place of a passport (if you lose your passport just before travelling)?

I'm pretty sure you can only get that if you lose your passport in another country and need to get home. You can't get it if you haven't left Ireland yet.

What you may get is an emergency passport from the passport office if you present in person and have proof of immediate travel plans. It'll cost you though.

No such ID is issued by the Gardai.

No but if they were travelling to the uk with aer lingus they could use a driving licence.

Or if they had no id at all but going on the ferry the guards can give you a very basic form of id. I can't remember the name of it atm. Without further info from the op no one can really advise.

Virtually anything with your photo on it is acceptable to Aer Lingus on UK flights, even an employee id badge.

On the ferry they hardly ever look for ID when boarding or disembarking. Even arriving in France I've never been asked for passport or anything by the French cops.
