Howdy, I need a bit of help and I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in one of the legal forums-I guess I'll post there later too...anywho. I want to legally change my name during the Summer due to trasitioning. The thing is I don't have a clue where to begin. The whole finding a solicitor crap is especially irritating. Is it true that you have to personally know a solicitor for the deed poll, as in had prior dealings with him/her?

If so that presents a major problem for me as I never had dealings with one, nor do I know anyone who has. Anyone who has done this recently and who can give me the low down with the facts then please help!

Not at all. I found a solicitor on the morning near Four Courts with an application filled out, and the whole thing was written correctly, printed out, and sent into FC by afternoon. It's a fairly painless process once you have the correct documentation with you. You don't actually need a solicitor, I just found it made things easy.

You only need a solicitor to "swear" the deed poll and supporting Affidavit - ie witness you physically signing. Just bring a passport to identify yourself and €10-20 for swearing fee.

If you are in Dublin is recommend dropping into the central office of the four courts. They will give you the forms and tell you what u need to do.

It's simple enough once yiu know what you're doing.

As far as I know the Dublin Trans Peer Support Group does this regularly

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Thanks for the advice everyone. It was most helpful. I definitely feel a bit less stressed about the procedure now.

They can't swear unless they have a solicitor or commissioner for oaths in the office. I'm sure they can talk you through the forms though.

They organise the process and have someone who can sign off the forms

Cool. Do you know where and when they are on? I've been meaning to go try one out for about six months- but you know..procrastination.

FYI you only need to sign with the solicitor, there's no need to GOTO the courts and pay the 60 euro to enrolled it in court, despite what the new driving licence agents say.
I had a bad experience with them about this issue.

To change a name by deed poll, it must be registered in the central office of the high court - otherwise it's not effective.

If you don't lodge the deed poll there, you would then have to go by the name for 10 years or something before it would be recognised for official purposes.
