I'm looking for a satellite system for one purpose only which us to watch the World Cup when I'm in the west of France. There are a few cheap second hand lidl boxes floating around. Would these serve the purpose? Not to bothered about language, I just want to be able watch it but rte, bbc would be a bonus.

Get a proper dish and modern sat receiver. Some run off 12V, but you can use an inverter. The Maplin / Aldi / Lidl one has a too small dish and basic ancient SD Sat receiver.

You won't get RTE in France, or even in Ireland on a "camping sat" system. BBC on 80cm dish if any drizzle.

Will the Lidl/Aldi one be able to pick up a free to air channel (From france, spain, anywhere) just to watch the soccer. I’m only spending 30 quid on this and will probably throw it out when I get home.

Not any HD (MPEG4) or DVB-S2 channel. It will work with any Ku Band DVB-S SD (MPEG2 only) channel that is Free to air with enough signal.

Only strong signals or when not raining hard. The Dish is very small.

Check www.lyngsat.com that you will be in an area with a suitable Satellite Footprint that doesn't use DVB-S2 for the channel and there is a channel with the content.

Appreciate your answer but it's over my head. I'm guessing that the signal is hit and miss and not guaranteed?

Check www.lyngsat.com that you will be in an area with a suitable Satellite Footprint that doesn't use DVB-S2 for the channel and there is a channel with the content.

It could be perfectly reliable DEPENDING ON WHICH SATELLITE AND SPOT you use. But only some (or none) will have the sport you want in the area you are going to.

It depends on where you will be as to what satellite channels you can get. Apart from the issue if ANY have the football Free To Air.

The Camping sat doesn't do MPEG4 or HD or DVB-S2, so any channel using any of those won't work at all.

Did you get sorted and if so how?

Looking to do the same this year. Not very techie either!

Did the Lidl/Aldi one do the job?
