Ooops! Red faces in the wardroom . . .

    http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-cornwall-26577109

A Royal Navy warship torpedo was accidentally fired into a dockyard wharf, it has emerged.

HMS Argyll was on a "training exercise" at Devonport dockyard in Plymouth when the torpedo "unexpectedly jettisoned onto the wharf", said the Royal Navy.
It said the Test Variant Torpedo was a dummy weapon with no explosive content, but it did cause minor damage.

There were no casualties involved in the incident on Wednesday, but training has been suspended.

Ok who let Dougal into the Royal Navy?

I can just imagine the log entry for this event (something makes me think that in WW2 a US sub sunk a truck with a torpedo, I'm sure I read that somewhere?)

Accidents happen and thankfully nobody was hurt.

AFAIR, it sunk itself, I have a book about it somewhere, if I find it over the w/e I'll try and post it here.

Did a dummy also fire it, or was it malfunction of some sort?

The thread title is totally inaccurate.

Of course some navy's dont have the problem of accidentally firing torpedo's, they don't have any.

Because they rely on others to have them :pac:

I can't think of any time when we needed others to have them.

Why bother having a navy at all then ?

Why not just have coast guard service.

You might be thinking of a scene from the movie Operation Petticoat where a misaimed torpedo heads up a beach and takes out a truck instead of the intended moored target much to Cary Grant's dismay. It's a hoot, I tells ya.

Of course, in the real world, trucks sink subs!
