Grant on buying electric

    Been thinking of changing the car, and the wife has a notion for an electric one. According to this site;

    http://www.esb.ie/electric-cars/electric-car-news-and-events/electric-car-press-releases/electric-cars-a-reality-for-ireland.jsp

    "Those purchasing an electric vehicle will be grant aided by the Government to the tune of €5,000 and exempt from VRT. The ESB will provide the charging infrastructure in the homes of the new owners of electric cars."

    Does that mean you can get the €5k grant even if you're buying a car in the North and importing it?

    Electrics are about €20k minimum in the South, but you could get one in the North for about £11k(€13k), claim back €5 and pay no VRT?

    That would be a new motor on the road for about €8k, no road tax, crazy cheap running costs.

    Surely too good to be true? I realise it's "up to" €5000, but what are the criteria?

    Might have answered my own question, looks like the grant only applies if you're buying from an approved dealer in Ireland.

    So it's not really "grant aided and VRT exempt", it's either or!

    Might be better value to buy on the UK mainland and have it shipped over or if you can drive it back even better.

    You'll be charged VAT if it's less than 6 months old and I think 6,000 miles though don't quote me on that, the info is on revenue.

    You get a maximum of 5,000 euros back on VRT, I'm not sure how it works now, you used to be VRT at exempt but not any more.

    I presume you were thinking of a leaf ? What year ?

    If you buy from the UK you are buying the price including the UK government grant anyway.
