In theory you need a yagi aerial 10 metres high that tracks the transmitter direction as you drive about. However in a strong signal area one of the omni directional aerials sold in the DIY sheds might do.

All seems a bit pointless though. Aren't the radio stations on Saorview also available on FM and DAB?

They're on the limited DAB service but not all are on FM.

Here is a car DVB-T tuner with aerials. Not sure if it does MPEG 4 or not, but if you only want radio that should not matter.

It's only a few pointless RTE only stations on DAB & DTT only.
DAB is pointless and only of benefit to RTE.

DTT "Radio" could change from MP2 to AAC and then many non MPEG4 portable DTT receivers for a car won't work.

Coverage would be very poor on a car aerial on DTT for over 75% of Ireland.

The RTE stations on VHF-FM are higher audio quality and with a proper 75cm car aerial reception is far far better. Also there is virtually nationwide R4 LW and many good AM stations at night (Daytime in East & North East).

A LW/MW/VHF-FM car radio is more choice and much better coverage.
