i have an ssd in my own machine but this isn't for me and he wants to use a hdd that he already has, upgrading to ssd later..

Get the Asus gtx 760 then with the extra money.

You could make some cuts to the board, psu and case and get the ssd and 760 if you wanted.

But isn't the idea to have your OS on the SSD? So adding it 'any time' could be tricky?

Well it's not such a big thing really as formatting the HDD and installing the OS there means you should have the drivers on a USB ready. Just keep them on the USB and when it comes to upgrading to the SSD use it again.
I bought my partner a Samsung 840 pro ssd a couple weeks ago and he used the magician software which allows you to simply copy the OS over no bother. Course I am a purist and love reinstalling my OS every 6 months to run an optimum of minimal clutter.

Have to agree, I had to reinstal 6 OS's in the past month with family and friends PCs. Get an OS disc, download the drivers for what you need basically USB, Ethernet etc. Though USB are generally on there. With a blank SSD it is easier as all you do is stick the disc in and basically wait. It will walk you through everything. It will take a while but honestly it is really easy these days.
Oh and when you get online it will usually download all the missing drivers. You know when you insert a new mouse or something like that and it goes online to search the drivers? Same thing happens

Get yourself an 8gb usb stick and stick a bootable copy of windows on it.

Installs much much faster than the dvd and means you don't need a dvd drive. You can also stick the updates onto it.

Slightly off topic, what's the easiest way to back up my drivers to usb, have windows part done already. Google gives different advice. Am going for a clean install in ssd.

I'd just put them on a separate usb stick to windows. Throw all the latest board and graphics drivers on there.
