Question on Internal promotions

Maybe a current member can help me here. Rank and file gardai can sit their sergeant's exams, but could a Garda be promoted straight to Inspector?
Or do you have to be a sergeant to be promoted to Inspector?
    Thanks

No. Do Sergeants exam. Pass and your eligible for interview. Then if successful you can do Inspectors exam and if successful do interview.

Its also worth noting that plenty of members pass the sgts exam and never see their stripes

I saw a figure somewhere that indicated the number of members who retire at Garda rank is in the high 80%.

That wouldn't surprise me. I mean say their was 1 sergeant to every 20 gardai their might then be one inspector for every 10 sergeants.

Every step you go up the numbers get smaller so not everyone will make it past garda especially as many specialise rather then get promoted.

I'd say like a lot of jobs first promotion is the hardest to get.
