It's on in ten mins btw.

This should be good. I'm a big McGregor fan and I reckon it might be a good introduction to mixed martial arts for someone who has no experience of the sport.

Enjoyed watching it. McGregor comes across as a very likeable chap. Tearing your cruciate in round 2 of the fight and still managing to close out and win. Dont know a lot about the UFC but you can see why McGregor is such a popular figure for the sport. Well dressed, clued in and the gift of the gab. Programme was well done.

    Damn, missed it.
He seems to be a pretty accomplished fighter.
Just watching some of his stuff on Youtube, really agile, great balance, and some killer blows.

Watched this last night and have to say it all seemed a bit pointless.

Yes, he's an undoubted talent and (having heard numerous other interviews with him) an unusual character with a relatively interesting backstory but the documentary makers seemed to ignore all this.

Instead we got a very hollow programme which told us very little about him and seemed more interested in his clothes, sunglasses and silly hats rather than what was actually driving him close to the top of MMA/UFC.

He's some boy...a ready made Hollywood star via Dublin, he's like a character from a movie, stands out in his field for sure

Totally agree. Funny enough character and obviously very talented, but the documentary was completely pointless - nothing actually happened. There was no real interview with him to get his back story, very little footage of him training to get where he is now. And also, without knowing a lot about MMA, would it be fair to say he hasn't actually achieved much of note yet, hence there being nothing to talk about other than his clothes and quotes?

Yeah...it was a real missed opportunity imho.

Too much mugging/posing for the camera and talking cack rather than making an attempt to get to know him. The scenes in Boston when he went swimming and then flexing his muscles on a rock was pure tabloid crap and added nothing whatsoever

Some comedy gold though with his father and the magical 3-D Muhammed-Ali picture......actually lol'd when it appeared on the kitchen wall towards the end of the programme :D

What struck was was the last 10 minutes of the documentary after he had suffered a serious knee injury, he put a bit of ice on it and was strolling around the next day even though he probably knew it was bad (not to mention his probable antics with his girlfriend that night based on the state of the beds in the hotel bedroom ;)). In any other serious professional sport, his coach and the medics would have ensured he was assessed straight away to prevent any more damage.

His devil-may-care attitude was entertaining but I've a funny feeling it might all end in tears before he's achieved anything of note.

Summed it up in one for me. If he was a serious athlete in a serious sport, there's no way he wouldn't have been taken straight to a hospital for a scan. That wouldn't even happen at County level in the GAA!!

    He's a bit of a clown.

I'm a big MMA fan but he's just impossible to like. At risk of being banned, I won't say what I really think. :o

That being said, if all goes to plan he will be a massive PPV draw for the UFC and a very wealthy man before long. He'll be one of our best known athletes, if not the best.

MMA (UFC level) is an incredibly serious sport.

Seems a bit of a fool, to caught up with posing and saying catchy quotes ect, what the documentary lacked was a real in depth look into the sport of MMA, i'm no little about MMA it would have been better to show more of his training, what it takes to get to the top of MMA, some of it was funny but it focused to much on his cloths, him talking ****e. Regardless if he has the skills he will become a very big draw in the UFC and a massive name in Irish sport, i have my doubts he will reach the very top though, his attitude seems a bit to laid back as many mentioned any top athlete would surely have gone straight to a hospital for a scan and look after themselves instead of walking around the day after as if it was just knock, he may not like to admit it but the injury he suffered was quite a serious one and he needs to take it more serious IMO he hasn't made it yet.

I don't think people are being fair to the lad. MMA/UFC is a very new sport. A lot of it involves catching the publicity to grow the sport and McGregor is clearly a great fit to do it. The loose talk is very similar to boxing but McGregor takes it to a different level. He seems very driven. He doesn't appear to have a big team behind him so not surprising that he wouldn't have received the best care after the fight. This sport is all about making money for those involved and catering for the needs of those involved has a still a lot of catching up to do.
I wouldn't be a great fan of the sport, all that grappling on the floor and kicking guys into the face. It is hardly something you would like your kid doing.
I thought the documentary gave a good insight into the physical training they need to do, issues with controlling their weight and like boxing a lot of the hangers on involved profiting from the sport. I just hope the lad gets someone legit to look after his money.
I loved the bit in the car where he had the pen in his mouth and was talking to the taxi driver and he was talking about the importance of talking clearly so his audience can understand him. That takes a lot of awareness and he put it across in an almost Muhammad Ali type way.

I think most of the 'negative' comments on here are more aimed at the programme makers rather that McGregor himself.

The way it was edited and put together made him look like a bit of publicity hungry tool....now he may well be a publicity hungry tool but a programme like this will never be able to enlighten the viewer one way or another.

Might have been worth them doing a 'Notorious...Hanging with Hector'. Hector might just have been able to get something out of him and if not, yer man could have just beaten the sh1te out of him...a win-win situation :D

I don't think the doc makers did him a disservice. That was a pretty accurate portrayal of his personality - his public one at least.

this was basically an hr long advert for the UFC coming in July. That's all. There was zero insight into anything other than he likes flashy sh1te, which if you follow MMA you'll already have known that

I've heard lots of people (not specifically here) say they think he's too arrogant and full of himself etc... but in all fairness, you'd need to be to take part in that sport. I wouldn't say any lad that tends to doubt himself or allow modesty to get in the way of things would last very long in that game.

I don't follow the sport at all but it seems to have quite a bit to do with self-promotion also.. maybe even more-so than professional boxing, so a quiet reserved fella would probably find it very difficult to get ahead in the profession.

Didn't see this but I don't like McGregor.
Cocky and hasn't achieved anything of note yet.
His backstory is coming from a poor background? Isn't that the same background as all celebs in Ireland?
Also has an American accent, idiot.

I loved him he has inspired me. The man had a vision and nothing is going to stop him also taught there was a bit of friction between him and his dad?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,399 ✭✭✭fatherted1969

Hadn't seen much about him only what my kids told me and have to say i enjoyed it greatly. A very charismatic young man. Looks to me like he's come from a very wealthy background which is no big deal i suppose. Thought the father was a bit of a t**l if im honest. Trying to be funny in a very unfunny way. Very early in his career to have a full hour long documentary devoted to him but he creates a buzz when he talks and fights and i can see what the fuss is about. Very proud of his roots too

I see RTE gave an hour long documentary to a prelim cage fighter but they aren't showing Prince Devitt in the New Japan Cup live this morning.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,543 ✭✭✭Mick Murdock

Doubt anybody in RTÉ has even heard of Fergal Devitt, nevermind New Japan.

Can just imagine Jimmy Magee commentating on that..

It would be Unfair to say!
He was a two weight world champion in the biggest mma organisation in Europe before he moved over to the UFC.

Well in fairness, who can mention any current world champion in European MMA? Doubt anyone would unless they watched MMA.

Also how embarrassing is it that you said he was a two weight world champion in the biggest MMA organisation in Europe.

World Champion for Europe...yeah that makes sense. :pac:

How embarrassing?? Really?? Why don't you come train mma and then we will see embarrassing!!

Cage Warriors where Conor was a 2 weight champ, is a worldwide promotion, they have fighters from all over the planet. They are the biggest promotion in Europe. Not the world as the UFC is bigger but they are probably the 3rd biggest organisation in the world. So I never said he was world champion for Europe. Read it again and get your facts right rather than just coming across like a begrudger on here.

Hilarious that people suggest he doesn't take it seriously or that the fact he was walking around on his leg after the fight was an indication that the organisation or sport is Mickey Mouse. You have to wait for swelling to go down to assess such an injury. The UFC had him put up in the States for afew months for an operation with one of the world's top surgeons and his re-hab thereafter.
