Will this thing show me "where to go" on the installed map or is it just collecting info with the GPS ?

There are no installed maps, it shows a breadcrumb trail and gives you an warning of upcoming turns (and off course alerts), how well this works has a lot to do with the quality of the source of your route file.

The best way to make route files that I have found is to compile the route on Ridewithgps and then export as a tcx.
