Wall mountable satellite decoder?

Is their such a thing? By this I dont mean putting a regular box against the wall, I mean one that can be mounted flat and have any display facing the viewer, not the ceiling or floor..

I have a wall mounted TV, radiator below it and no where to place a decoder. The TV has an inbuilt freesat tuner but is starting to age and a replacement is expensive and hard to get..

Stay clear all of them suffer from overheating and poor psu issues, nothing should be placed at the back of a tv for safety issues and bad ventilation that will be caused should u block ventilation holes on your tv.

I have seen tons of the Ferguson, Ariva made as well as go clever ones manufactured ones all which suffer in the same way

The radiator under the TV pushing loads of heat up at it isn't going to help any of the heat issues either.

None of the solutions mentioned so far are Freesat receivers. No Freesat box of this kind exists. The receivers mentioned in this thread are generic free-to-air, with only "now & next" programme info.

OTOH, if the OP doesn't care about Freesat & its EPG, they might like to know that the entire LG tv range have free-to-air satellite tuners fitted & aren't "expensive & hard to get".

It's the option I'd be looking at, unless I had my heart set on some other make of tv with no inbuilt satellite tuner. However, if wall-mounted Freesat is the requirement, then you just have to go with the tv offerings from Samsung & Panasonic.

I have one of these, Lavatronics.co.uk do online channel updates for it too, just install their firmware which is setup with the upgrade server details and you can click http upgrade and update the channels list

It doesn't matter which one u go for all will suffer the same fate, nothing should be put in behind a tv hanging on a wall in my opinion unless there is adequate air ventilation....

All these small boxes suffer from bad design and are usually roasting hot during operation.

There's plenty of ventilation behind a TV compared to stuffing them inside the small opening in some TV units. These boxes are designed to be used this way, come with self adhesive tape on the mounts. The back of a flatscreen doesn't get that hot lower down in the middle, the heat usually comes out the vents at the top.

Over a rad is no place for a TV though

I beg to differ I have seen about 5 different makes of these boxes all are poorly made and suffer from heat issues as a result of being squashed into such a small box and poor capacitors in the psu unt, I have seen the damaged caused as a result and a shop I do work for no longer sell any of these units anymore as a result, they were previously selling the Ariva and Go Clever models and every last one has come back for replacement on more than one occasion.

    They should all be avoided

Thanks Guys, interesting discussion. For what its worth, the radiator never gets that hot - this is a sun room which is generally not worth heating in winter and gets roasting from the sun in the summer..

Didnt know these micro devices were available - perhaps with a large heat sink..?

You don't mention the Amiko HD Mini which is the one I'm referring to, it's not actually that small or that squashed for space and is much bigger in size than the Ariva or 4IFE Mini devices posted already. This is from the spec sheet 144mm*40mm*110mm, it's not a whole lot smaller than an Alien 1, just a neater form factor with sticky tabs and IR receiver

Ive never used an amiko mini but as I already have said any I have used suffered in exactly the same way and all came with sticky backs and a sensor you bring round to the front of the tv so you can control the box.

All makes I have tried so far have been problematic but that's not to say the Amiko one will

I personally perfer to see the box so that I can add say a usb pen for recordings or playback with movies and would use a small shelf such as the one I have provided a link to here...

Best of luck with whatever you decide in the end.

I got an Amiko Mini to try at work. Seems a nice enough wee box. I did note it has self adhesive strips as well as 2x slotted holes for mounting on screws.

Box seems to work fine, but it's only running a week. I would be inclined to agree with steveon with regards putting these, or any satellite rxr in a tight space, as they do get quite warm in general.

They might be OK behind a wall mounted TV that isn't mounted flat to the wall, but on an arm-type bracket where there'd be a distance between TV and where the STB would be. Above a radiator would be an absolute no, though.

However, if the Amiko is the same as the Ferguson with maybe overheating issues... I will find out in time. When back at work on Tuesday, I must check how hot it actually gets, as I'd suspect the Ferg and the Amiko to be quite similar internally.

The amiko range of receivers are a very good well made and supported brand.
