I'm surprised with everyone except the OP are going to either Toronto or Vancouver, from the research I have done Vancouver and Toronto are the most expensive and hardest places to get a job?

I think it's relative though, they might be the priciest places in Canada, but despite what people say, all the big-business global comparissons of cities that I've seen in the past year put Dublin as more expensive in most categories than either of those Canadian cities. That means, as soon as we leave this island, Canada is cheaper overall.

I haven't look recently at Toronto stats put I know Vancouver unemployment is 6% and British Columbia is a little higher which is well below the national average.

If left to just numbers, you could research forever. A few people on the other side pointed out to me that more than these numbers, attitude and determination to succeed matter. I'm keeping my chin up so! :)

Regina is an option but Canada's 2nd largest city is not? :(

Regina isn't even the largest city in Saskatchewan! :pac:

I thought you couldn't move to Quebec on the IEC scheme, don't they have their own work permit system or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 295 ✭✭montreal2011

Of course you can go to Quebec on the IEC, that's how I ended up in Montréal.

For permanent residency in Quebec you must first apply to and get accepted by Quebec before you can make the federal application; in all other provinces you can go straight to the federal application.

I'm surprised more people aren't looking outside of the big cities. I am going to Whistler, BC.

I have a degree, but I'm not looking for a graduate career just yet, just a working holiday!

A very nice place to visit but maybe not the best place for job prospects. I guess it depends on what kind of work you're looking for.

For the first couple of painful months waiting for the IEC to open, I was set on Toronto. But since it's opened, I voted Vancouver. Seems like an awesome city with a climate more similar to Ireland, too. Toronto's average annual 65+ days of snowfall terrified me. It's approx <10 for Vancouver. That rocky mountain refreshement. Those rocky mountain's keep the climate much less mental during the winters.

I hope you like rain because what Vancouver lacks in snow it sure makes up for in relentless downpours!!

I thought the same before I moved to Vancouver but it rains even more here than it does in Ireland. You'll be grand for the summer anyway.

*Bump* ALOT of activity on the forum (as expected) tonight, bumping this out of curiosity of our fellow travelers!
Also, anyone know best website for renting in Vancouver? For jobs indeed.ca seems good, but for housing, I'm not familiar with a decent alternative to Daft... I know craigslist is popular there but I had the interface. :pac:

You must be on crack if you think it rains more in Vancouver than Ireland! Although I've been told I've been lucky for the last 9+ months.

Use padmapper, it overlays various rental sites onto a map which is excellent when you are not familiar with the city.

Lovely spot alright, it's like the mediterranean in the summer, it's in the wine region. And in the winter you have the snow for skiing and snowboarding at Big SHíte

I am thinking Vancouver. I have friends I met travelling in Seattle which is about 4 hours away. I thought it might help with the home sickness. But just reading how people are finding it expensive and hard to get work :( I am in retail atm and would love to switch to a 9-5

A lil unrelated but does anyone know if you can get a Canadian driver license in exchange for your Irish one in Alberta? Or any province for that matter?

Using exactly the same (few) criteria, Padmapper shows only a fraction of what I see on Craigslist or Kijiji. I thought Padmapper would scan them all...

I was panicking a little about accommodation because I was looking at padmapper and rentfaster, and there seemed to be so little available. I looked at kijiji though and was relieved to see it's not that bad (though still pretty poor for a city the size of Calgary, I guess because of the flooding)

Try Craigslist too by the way. With Craigslist particularly, people keep warning about scams e.g. don't pay money before getting there so that has to be noted. But, I do see quite a few places on there and I love the easy to read map. Hopefully that will turn up a few places in Calgary for ya. Lastly, a few people mentioned just wandering around a neighbourhood and keep an eye out for signs, that lots of places aren't advertised online. Again, I don't know how common/un that is Cal but at least if you're heading to the supermarket keep your eyes peeled I guess...

I'm making regional threads based on this poll. We have Calgary, Van and Toronto, and I'll add threads for Newfoundland and Labrador, Saskatchewan and Edmonton.

If anyone feels other cities/provinces need a thread, let us know.
