    Hi all

another kid on the way so i have to think about selling the avensis and getting an mpv probably mid sized (3 kids).

Tax and fuel will be an issue since the car load will be putting us under pressure. This car will probably be doing less than 8000 miles a year so could anybody advise on tradeoff between road tax for petrol and diesel
    models

    ie touran, smax

    not considering anything french

Budget wise can probably stretch to 13k at the outside

No point in diesel at those miles. If you were happy with the Avensis, how about a Corolla Verso?

S-Max is the best family car, but you'd want a 2008 2.0, and at least Zetec spec, so at your budget they'll have high miles. This one is the best I see in carzone, and it's an automatic, which may not suit.

Mine has done more miles than that since 2008, still going well.

I own a 1.8 petrol FRV, great vehicle. 6 full size seats and not as big looking as some other MPVs.

    thanks for replies

no thanks for the irrelevant (although I agree) taxation rants

    anyone else?

PS Why the ridiculous prices for MPV's to me 13k is a lot of money yet
it barely gets you a five year old mpv with 60k+ miles

I bought my avensis diesel 4yrs old with 46k mile on it for just under 11k

    wtf

A bigger saloon/estate would probably do
    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volkswagen/Passat/ESTATE-1/38813906552107320/advert?channel=CARS

€270 to tax, a not so little rocket and to most customers, sale proof so a deal to be done.

If interested, go and look, ask if you can take a spin then lose interest when you're told its petrol, though having seen the sales guys in action they'd probably let you walk at that point.

First rule in affordability of cars is don't spend tens of thousands buying the car in order to save a couple of hundred in motor tax. Plenty of cars (with criminal motor tax) for less than €5k that will do all you need.

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/toyota-previa-7-seats-nct-07-14/6478809

5 years of ownership will cost €3500 for the car and €5k in motor tax.

Once you get to 3 kids, you really need an MPV or an SUV, and SUVs are even dearer. If changing my S-Max for new I'd want the €40K model, a CRV would be a couple of thousand more, and a Volvo XC90 is €50K.

No you don't. Atlantic Dawn's post makes complete sense.

Atlantic Dawn is linking to a Previa, a huge MPV!

I'm not suggesting you need a new MPV or even a €13K MPV, but big cars are designed for two adults in the back, not 3 kids.

nobody is suggesting spending 10's of thousands to save hundreds but all things being equal Id prefer tax of 300 to 800
