Noise coming from clutch

    Hello all,

I have a 2002 Rav 4 with 40,000 miles. In the last few days I've noticed a noise when I press the clutch. It stops as soon as the clutch is fully in and doesn't happen as I release the clutch. It's quite faint - I only noticed it when I turned the stereo off to listen to directions on my phone. A spinning, grinding noise is the best I can describe it.

A bit of Googling suggests it might be the pilot bearing (whatever that is!). Does this sound right? If so, can anyone say roughly how much it will cost to get fixed?

    Many thanks :)

~Sounds like clutch/flywheel also which can be expensive upto 1k.
I have the same on my car, if I don't clutch fully a kinda rattling grinding sound starts and garage has already told me I need to replace the clutch and flywheel.
It's a BMW so parts alone are nearly €800 plus around few hundred for labour.

Although 40k miles is very low for it to go so hopefully its not that.

Thanks - I'm really hoping I don't have to replace the clutch! It's going for new tyres next week so I'll ask my mechanic to look at it then.

Sounds more like release bearing to me.
All clutch jobs have pretty much the same labor... prob worth changing clutch friction plate and release bearing every time you drop the gearbox...but i wouldnt be replacing the DMF "while your at it"...unless you know its gone.

If the noise is faint and disappears when the clutch is disengaged (foot fully down) then it might be just normal gearbox noise. The gearbox components stop spinning when the clutch is disengaged. A friends Avensis does this.

Release bearing went on my Golf a couple of weeks back. Full clutch replacement, €163 for clutch + €180 labour at an indy garage. Gear change is nice and smooth now.
