Stepper Motor for Macro Wind Turbine

    Has anyone any idea what the inductance per phase or operating voltage of this? Or the best way to find out? I've got a mulitmeter and a drill!:D

    That's the AC input of the entire fixture including an electronic ballast and an MSR 575watt bulb.

    I'm looking for the DC PCB voltage level driving the stepper.

    Not listed on stepper manufacturers website.

    That one looks like 24v 1a 38mm depth. I tried using something similar, managed about 6v and 0.25amps at full steam on the drill.(500rpm)
    At no load, it could hit 80volts!

    Internal resistance of the windings is poor, but very low magnetics, so just no power,

    Nema 17.
    Magnets are 20mm deep, case 37mm.
    2 phase, centre tapped windings for high torque...probably a drawback in a generator? Cogging?

    By poor resistance do you mean high impedance? I can forgive a lot not to have to bother winding coils and epoxying ballistic hazards.

    40v across one phase spinning with a screwgun with a dying battery. Open circuit.
    20v across one phase spinning by hand. OC.
    No time to get fancy resistors, ammeters or batteries on it yet.

    I'm in negotiations for 4 stepperss. I'm hoping to get ~20watts from maybe ~200-800RPM or geared. I'm not sure which would have the least losses. One stepper geared up and a electronic boost regulator or 4 steppers in series off a central cam...possibly with gearing and a regulator anyways. Any thoughts?

    End of generator target voltage ~24V OC. 15v loaded.

    Just to be difficult I want the HAWT blade diameter < 0.5m.
    Cut-in wind-speed 3m/s > 4.5m/s
    & decommissioned at speeds > ~9m/s.

    Do-able?
    ....ok :pac: how about 10watts?

    I think you might have a lot more fun with this if you invested in an electric bike hub kit. :D

    Nice idea but I reckon you'd need a car hub to support the blades you'd want to turn one of those. Can't see a teeny bicycle wheel bearing lasting very long under that strain.
    I'm just looking to build a discrete generator; 10 > 50watts to supplement a solar system in the Winter.

    I'll get around to a 1kW in time.

    They're pretty rubbish alright....just about pushing 1 watt at full tilt on a 14.4v drill with phases in series before I even try to rectify it. Serious cogging drag with a load on, I'd never turn four off one cam with any merit.
    The coil resistance is killing the output...back to the drawing board. :(

    First time searching results were 500W - 1kW kits for silly money.

    Put ad in local paper looking for a crashed bike. I got one for free because the batteries needed replacing and the owner would part with the money.

    You could use the bike fork as a mount and use alu flashing bent around spokes to make blades.

    That is what I'm planning to do.
