Sounds like the reversing light switch is knackered. It's obviously triggered when you put the car in to reverse.

I had the opposite problem, reverse lights stopped working.

Tried bulbs, fuses etc. Finally got a mate to keep engaging the reverse gear while I sprayed 'switch cleaner' at the linkage.

Dislodged whatever was there and it's worked as it should ever since.

    Maybe try the same?

Presume switch is located in the gear box?

While its in the gearbox, its accessible from outside. I did one a few weeks back on a Clio and it screws out of the side of the gearbox. It looks a little like a sparkplug. On the Clio is was quite easy to locate and only took a few minutes. Seems to be common enough on Renaults so there should be a few youtube videos etc if you want to have a crack at it yourself...
