Sole Trader VAT in the UK

    Hello,

Just wondering if anyone can help me with a question I have.

I am a sole trader and purchase all my goods from the UK and I pay UK VAT on all goods. I am NOT VAT registered and have been trading a few months now but my main supplier is now insisting that by UK law I need to be VAT registered to continue buying from them and also refunded all VAT that I have paid so far into a credit account with them

As far as I was aware I didn't need to register for VAT but had to pay UK VAT.

    Am I wrong?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

If you are not VAT registered then you must pay UK Vat.

The UK Trader may be oblidged to register in Ireland and account for Irish vat depending on the nature of the goods and they may be unwilling to go to this expense so are seeking that you VAT register.

They cannot make this a legal pre-requisite for doing business with you and it is NOT required by UK law as you are not VAT registered.

If you register for VAT in Ireland by filing a TR1 Form then you will be able to receive the goods free of UK Vat but will have to self account for Irish VAT on it and take a simultaneous deduction.

This is general advice only as certain goods like 4th schedule goods are taxed where they are received.

    Will do,

So I called Revenue (Tallaght) and went to the VAT section. Explained my predicament with all the details of me being a sole trader and not being VAT registered but buying from the UK.

The lady I spoke to was very helpful and it turned out I was right in saying that no I am not obliged to register for VAT but must pay UK VAT @20%. This is charged for the goods and shipping. She also gave me a contact email address to forward to my supplier to confirm or if they had any questions.

Very helpful and quick answers from Revenue, I was very pleased with the service.

Hope this can help others out there
