I don't work in the area myself but, it's a fine job although the pay has been quite drastically reduced from previous years it's still well paid, basically without having much foreknowledge you can be scanning some hours then manual checks and VIP duties somedays, but there's a great variety in the job! Shifts usually range from 5am - 1:30pm, 1:30pm - 10pm a mid shift as well from about 10am to 6:30pm and the night shift from 10pm to 6am. There are some shifts as well where there's a small pay increase for the hours you're working i.e. unsociable hours, you can usually swap shifts with other people too it doesn't seem to be that hard to do. But its a great way to start off your career in an airport, it gives you your feet and you'll never know where it could take you that's the great thing. :)

I thought 'ASU' was Air Support Unit.

    Congratulations on getting the job!

Is your job title ASU or Passenger a services?
I've been working for pax services for 3 and a half years. The job it's self is handy enough, if a bit repetitive but it's fine. Just to clarify some of the above, it's mostly longer serving staff the work on ramp access, not because of any sense of entitlement but because they have ramp IDs it's the same for VIP access. Everybody is signed off and licenced by Dept of Transport, (or whatever it is their called nowadays!) for x ray usage, frisking and access control, reading boarding cards, we rotate on a scheduled basis so every hour or so you'll be doing something different. I'll will say that the classroom training elements can be tough for a lot of people so your not exactly in the door yet, although the trainers are great, their willing to give assistance to anyone who is finding it tough so don't be afraid to ask for clarification on something your not sure about. After all it is a serious job we do!
As Jack said above there is great opportunities to progress and move about in within the company. So if your have a particular set of skills like a trade or something you can certainly go to one of the asset care teams if and when vacancies arise.
All the best and good luck for the future!

And just to add to Gumbo1 and the other lads posts, ASU is a great stepping stone into the Airport Police and Airport Fire Service if you are interested in that end of things.

Best of luck with the new job, the airport really is a great place to work.

I would be surprised if the asu was a stepping stone into the Airport police, judging by some of the characters working there currently. As jobs go it seems half decent but must be monotonous at times. What else do they do other than pax/staff screening?

Airport Police is all recruited in-house now, you need 1 years service in the ASU as experience

Your into T1 so. Look it's a great job with permanent positions, i'm sure you'll enjoy it and be in the airport for a long time. Congrats again, there's not enough boardsies in the airport imo! Ya never know we may cross paths at some stage!

Just go easy with the whole... "I'm just going to check your waistband" routine. A few suspicious characters in the ASU who seem to enjoy the job a bit too much

Yup can be uncomfortable to say the least. I hate when there's an inspection on (well someone with a clipboard watching on) and the screening staff go ott

The whole random thing is a bit dodge too but maybe I'm just unlucky!

Hi lads, old thread I know but my brother has an interview for search unit on reduced hours " but should be flexible so hours can be bumped up to full time"

Just looking to see how many hours reduced hours actually is and what's the likelihood of a full time position coming out of this?

    Cheers

IF he gets through the interviews, the training and the exams and finishes the 12 month probationary period, depending how his track record, time keeping, willingness to do over time (benefiting the operation), how many people that joined before him that are looking for full time, how many FT positions come available. I'd say just as good a chance as the next person really!

Oh, you'll be in the door before ya know it. There's 20 new starters that will be completing their training by the end of this week. Then another batch, which I presume you will be part of, will start training shortly afterwards. Our training department are flat out for the last few months.

    Best of luck to ya.

Hey JeffK88 I had a uniform fitting around the same time as you. I was wondering if you had heard anything recently about starting training?

I haven't heard anything either. Last communication from recruitment agency was sending on references about two weeks ago. It's due to delays in garda clearance I imagine. Eager to start now. checking e-mail at least ten times daily for past few weeks

I didnt expect it to take this long and hopefully we hear something soon

Evening guys, I dont know if anyone from the DAA or your recruitment agency told you's but the delay in people starting work now is Garda Clearance, DAA brought in this new rule that any staff member starting that will have an airside access permit will not be issued with said permit until they have a full Garda clearance. They used to issue you a temporary escort pass but now they will only issue them in emergency situations.

On average the Garda clearance is taking 4-5 weeks
