I am woundering if the gearbox will have to be removed to solve a small gearbox oil leak on the bottom of my Renault Trafic 2004 80dci, and if it does need removing what am I looking at in cost and time 1 to leave it into a Garage, or is it possibleto do it with a friend we are both not to bad at looking after our own van services, and we do have access to a pit,is it a silicone of gasket repair or both.

Cheers in advance of any help or info given.

PITA box to remove and the leak could be anything - it could even be the output shaft oil-seal so check if it's box oil or engine oil you're loseing - they leak engine oil out the back seal, down around the clutch and out the bellhousing. If your box is grinding in any gear this might be a good time to get if re-flowered by a gearbox center as it would be a bummer to put it in only to have to take it back out again. Throw in a new clutch while you're at it...and be fussy re-filling the box, right oil, right level. Right pita though..

Just had the clutch done las year I think you might be right on the output shaft, it is gearbox oil I am sure of that, drives great for an 04 not grinding through the gears very smooth gearbox. no oil after stopping after a long trip, but seems to drip as the enging gets cold giving the impression a gasket is expanding when cool. what do you think, any way Saturday its going up on a hoist hope to see something then, thanks for the imput just a bit of a stomper as its due its DOE end of March.

Me pahsonarry, I'd drain the gearbox oil, and I'd refill it with Lucas gear-stuff(the one in the white bottle with the pointy cap whose name eludes me right now..) and drive on....no leaks, good gears and no bills for a fair while...that's just a cheapo option, but it works.:) and costs €40...and if it is the box leaking, it's usually the input shaft seal that goes and it's not a simple seal to replace, there's stripping involved. Most of those '04 models had gearboxes that were skimped on - too crammed, poor quality components eg snap rings, synchros, it's not really a commercial box tbh, some were shimmed too tight and generally, they're a crappy box..

Got the van checked Saturday leak coming from the inner drive boot seal left hand side ordered from Renault original part costing €56.18 + VAT. and then have it fitted hope this sorts the problem.

Well that's not so bad, should be easy enough to replace. Box can stay in-situ as well I think, so much, much less labour. Good one. :)
