Anyone know where the cheapest source of Malaria tablets is in Ireland? I need enough for 8 weeks. I don't really care which brand they are.

We can't give medical advice on here but your health is invaluable. Different malaria tablets have different side effects, it's true that the ones with fewer side effects are more expensive but the only person who can guide you in this is your doctor, pennies saved in the short term may cost you in the longer term.

What about Smarties, or maybe chocolate buttons?

When it comes to medication and the internet, 'cheap' usually means completely fake (hence the reference to sweets) or a low dosage which is effectively useless. A regular course of malaria tablets for travel involves taking them for two weeks before you travel and two weeks after you come home so for an 8 weeks trip you will need a course of tablets for 12 weeks.

Go to your doctor or a travel clinic.

I know all of that already. I'm not looking for medical advice. I know the main brands that most people use and their various side effects.

However, what I would like to know is if anyone has found any unusually cheap sources from which I might be able to get tablets. Preferably Malarone, but I would go for Doxycycline or Lariam if they were significantly cheaper.

I'm curious as to how will you "go" for a particular drug? Has your doctor signed a blank prescription?

Tesco pharmacies tend to be cheaper for medications or it might be worth taking a trip to Northern Ireland but do not order prescription medication online.

Like the last poster said, you will need a prescription either way.

No sure where you're headed, but I got mine at the medical centre in Changi airport. It was possible to get the consult, scrip & meds there & then for a relatively small fee. The Doc on duty was actually an RCSI graduate & went through the process in some detail.

I was prescribed Doxycycline, which can be started just two days prior to entering a malarial area.

Consider a trial course before departure, if you are using this regime for the first time, to detect if you are likely to get side effects (e.g. for one week). Otherwise doxycycline need only be started just before exposure (e.g. 2 days), continued through exposure and for 4 weeks afterwards.

Just bought 14 Malarone tabs in local Boots for €27.

€2.50 on your Medical Card if you have one.
