06 Jetta Turbo?

I only bought it 2 months ago and was driving along the motorway yesterday when it seemed to lose power and I could barely keep it at 120 to get to work. Got in yesterday evening and it was like it never happened, drove perfectly!

Brought it to the mechanic today and he thinks it may be the turbo and it will be €860 for a new one or €650 for a reconditioned one. Its a bit of a sickener after only 2 months and Im not sure how definite the mechanic is that it is the turbo.

If its a thing that will come and go do I need to get it fixed straight away?

Or should I just to bring it to another garage where they could tell me for definite what it is?

    TIA!

I could be very wrong, but I assumed a turbo either works or it doesn't?

Bring it to decent garage and get it checked.
also 860 for a turbo seems v pricey to me

oh and if your car gives trouble - driving it at 120 kmh is not a good idea.

Try googling 'Limp mode'. Could be the turbo, but it could also be something as simple as a loose / cracked hose.

Second opinion OP. Where are you based ? We should be able to recommend someone decent close to you.

Ok i'm not from there so don't know anyone off hand, the nearest i know of is Eugene Walsh in Belfast (what about an hour away? ) hopefully someone can recommend someone closer :)

I would be surprised if the turbo was gone though, something just caused it to go into limp mode. A scan of the car with a diagnostic tool might tell you more.

Private sale I presume? Were there any warning lights on the dashboard at the time of the power loss? You really need to bring it to a garage that has proper diagnostic equipment before spending money on replacing parts based on guess work. If it lost power it will have logged a fault code on the car's computer which should help point to the problem.

I'm not a mechanic but if it was the turbo then I doubt it would drive ok the following night.

Get someone decent to check it over, some people always say oh mist be the turbo, when its not, could be something as simple as split vacuum hose, sticking vnt, dodgy actuator, wiring fault, boost sensor etc.

Did they tell you what the code was? Was probably an overboost one.

Did the engine managment light come on as well?
Were you reving the engine hard or going fast?
Sounds like it was in Limp Mode.
If there is no smoke coming out the back i wouldn't worry about it until it happens again.

Had a Saab that used to do it the odd time if i was reving it hard :D

I had an issue with my car also. Very randomly it would be barely driveable. Could happen once a month or a few times a week. I found turning it off and on again usually sorted it short term. Turned out to be the mass air flow meter. Changed it and hasn't happened since.

The quote for turbo is very pricey.
