Hi woke up this morning and saw a dent at the back of my car

kind of an odd position, with some white marks spread horizontally

i don't know how it happened, definitely it wasnt there yesterday

any ideas on how much it could cost to fix?

Did you compare the dent to the height of the Toyota pick up behind your car?

Before you go fixing it, find out what happened to it. If you didn't do it, then someone else did, and they are responsible for paying for it. Look around for cars with scrapes on them and black flakes of paint, if any came off your car.
My money would be on that pickup in the background.

yes but the height didn't match unless something was sticking out of the pickup, which there wasnt when i got there but could have been offloaded as much as i know

i questioned the owner but he said it wasnt his fault obviously and i had no proof it actually was him

i had a look at the back of the pickup and there were no specific black marks that i could relate to my car, although it was quite old and rusty

Whatever it was it was the perfect height to catch the latch and no higher or lower,
it was wide enough to mark the tail gate but not so wide as to crush the tail lamps.
The marks on the tailgate are above the dent.
The contact area seems to be about the width of the number plate recess

I can't see how another vehicle caused that.
A square-on contact should have damaged the tail lamps, and I doubt a diagonal contact (as in parking) would have left marks on both sides of the dent.
    Damned puzzling alright.

Was a road sweeper out lately?

    thanks for the feedback

chances of a road sweeper since last night would be small, however not impossible
