Selling a vehicle to a UK customer?

I am selling my LR Discovery, have it on donedeal but also had it on a specialist forum I have been using for a few years. Have got a reasonable offer from a guy in the UK, with very good history (or as much as you can tell from a private forum) and will probably / hopefully close the deal and sell at the weekend.

Can anyone advise whether I treat it as an Irish sale and just complete the vehicle registration cert change of ownership form and that is it? It will be a cash sale.

I know about the option to reclaim the VRT but looking at the figures and the nonsense involved, it may not be worth it (the €500 revenue fee and the NCTS fee will wipe out the majority of the VRT to be returned, plus I need to get it inspected etc). I will get some road tax back I hope though as it is taxed until end August.

No. You can't do it like that.
What you need to do is hand over your VRC (logbook) to the seller.
There is no official procedure of deregistering vehicle in Ireland when it's sold for export.
Wise thing to do here is write a receipt / contract of sale, containing details of both of you and vehicle details, just stating that seller is selling vehicle to the buyer. Dated and signed in two copies (one for each party).
This gives you some proof that vehicle was sold.

To reclaim VRT you would need to present it for inspection (cost €32), and this must one month (or less) before vehicle leaves the country.
Then you most likely need to trust the buyer to send you documentation proving vehicle was registered in UK. Once you forward this to revenue, you should get a refund (minus €500)
Even if it's few hundred quid, I still think it's worth it. In the end it's just one inspection for 32 quid and a bit of paperwork.

In relation to motortax refund, you would also need a proof that vehicle was registered abroad to get it back. So if you have to get this docs from buyer anyway, hardly any point in not getting VRT back.

Thanks for that, for some reason, I thought the cost of the NCTS inspection was much more. Will try and get a short notice inspection. . .

Remember it's separate thing to NCT, and only what links them is fact that they are done at the same place.
You can book it online on NCT website by choosing most right tab (on top) - VRT, and then choosing "Export examination" option.
Remember thought, that vehicle needs to be removed from Ireland the latest 30 days after inspection.
You might need to ask a buyer to keep a proof as well (f.e. ferry ticket).

Hope it works well for you,.

Thanks, waiting for confirmation that the guy is coming over this weekend and if all in order, plan is for him to take it away. Gonna be tight to get an inspection done, but will try. Had not really thought of selling it into the UK until I put up the forum posting.

I will do up a little letter for each of us to sign, photocopy it and give him a copy and the VRC.

I just had a look online for this VRT inspections (out of curiosity), and only few NCT centres have appointments available for this week (which you would need to do if buyer is coming at the weekend).
I'm sure though that over the phone availability for current week should be better.
