Hey guys I picked a golden axe arcade machine up the other day for $40
WHen I tested it out it seemed to work fine and no issues, then when i get it home, the monitor just hums a bit, all lights come on, but no picture. I dont see any lights coming on, on the mainboard either.

    I can provide pictures

Nice purchase, would love to see some photos of the cab itself.

Do you get any sound at all?

If there's sound but no picture it's a good indication there's a problem with the monitor.

If there's no sound and no picture, it might just be the game board or the power supply. Firstly, check the game board to make sure it's plugged into the jamma harness properly.

Secondly, if you can get another game board try that out too. Before you go poking around the monitor it's best to just make the game itself is alright first. Would be worth while checking the PSU at this stage too.

Monitor issues are the hardest to troubleshoot unfortunately. If it's that, hopefully something just came loose while transporting it.

Do is a visual inspection of the monitor just to see if any cables look to be hanging loose.

Take care in there though, there are voltages which have a serious bang from them.

There's a suction cup on the back of it with a red lead going into it. Do not touch this. Death may await you.

Hey Sorry for the lack on info, was late.
Thanks for the reply, so I looked all through the cabinet and couldn't see anything that was dangling or unplugged.
The Marquee Lights are on and the monitor but there is no sound and the coin lights aren't on

I unplugged and plugged back in the big harness as well, no difference.
In my completely unprofessional opinion, Id say the board isnt getting any power.
Thanks in advance guys and let me know if you need any more detailed

So the monitor itself is on and there's a glow from the neck? Brilliant! That's your biggest concern out of the way.

Something up with the game part of it alright then. The next (easiest) step would be to try another game board.

If on the off chance you live around South Dublin/North Wicklow I can lend you one.

After that, you'll be learning how to use a multimeter :)

By any chance you powered up the cab with the back door off? Check the interlock if there is 1, white block with a plunger, some you can pull the plunger out to power up the cab with the door removed

I didnt see an interlock anywhere and I put the back door on and has same effect
It was working yesterday then I moved it to my house and it didn't work
    here are some pics

Im located in Victoria BC Canada, sadly there are not many machines around here and I dont know even where I would start in finding a replacement That i could test locally.

One more thing, upon re reading some of the earlier posts I saw that 01s1n said there would be a glow from the neck?
Here is a pic of the neck when cabinet is on
    DSC_1315.jpg
I dont really see any glow coming from there, if I adjust the knobs on back I can get the screen to go green with descending horizontal lines.
Also, I found a switch on top that turns on and off sign and monitor, doesnt make a difference to my situation
And also a little switch behind the coin mechanism that appears to do nothing

Let me know what you guys think and if you need any close up pictures

    Good luck with it man,

    Hopefully just a loose connection

(as the previous person said watch clear of the rubber socket on the monitor as it holds alot of voltage)

    More mystery buttons!
found this twist knob inside near the coin mechanism.
    Sound levels? Again no effect

Your monitor looks fine, you should see the glow if you turn the light off but if you are getting green/lines its OK.

There is a heatsink on the gameboard, this is for the Audio, does it get hot at all?
Do any of the other chips on the gameboard get hot at all?
If no the chances are the gameboard isn't getting any power

I'd start by buying a cheap Digitial Multi Meter on ebay and testing the Jamma PSU, this is the silver box mounted beside the Game Boards with the screw terminals and wires going into it. This should be labeled something like
    Input: Earth, Live, Neutral
Output: Ground, +12V, +5V, -5V (Test these voltages are present), there is usually an adjuster for the 5V, DO NOT ADJUST THIS without a DMM to test you are only giving it 5Volts or you could fry the gameboard.
There may also be a fuse which screws into this PSU that may just be blown

Considering if was fine before moving it, the facts point to it being a loose connection somewhere. Have you checked the monitor neckboard to make sure its firmly seated etc?

So it looks like the jamma switching power is fried. Would you guys be able to suggest a new one I could buy on either amazon or ebay?

    One of these jobbies? http://www.giz10p.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=3

That is exactly what I'm looking for, only issue is I'm from bc canada and i don't think they ship to here.
Are there any specific requirements I should be looking for when buying one?
Thanks again for all help, I'd be happy to donate my old one if anyone is looking for parts

    Thanks for the links!
One other question I had was that I was told that I can use a computer power supply provided it was high enough wattage, is that true? If so are there any special requirements i should be looking for? I think I have a couple laying around the house

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,147 ✭✭✭CathalDublin

Well if you can work out all the pinouts/etc, I've seen tutorials online, I'd personally use a proper jamma power supply tho, much easier and thats what its designed for

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 nforbes

im having a tough time finding one to order as both links provided dont seem to have the equivalent terminals.
Here are some pictures if this helps

Any universal JAMMA PSU will do you, the one linked above has same pinouts as the photo you've posted
all thats in use there in your picture is
    +5v
    -5v
    +12v
    Ground
you don't need the 15V connections for anything, I've never seen a board use them.

    the FG
    AC1
    AC2
    are your mains inputs

what makes you think the power supply is b0rked ? did you test it with a multimeter ? if not, pick one up in BestBuy or Radioshack or similiar, and then test the output on each of the terminals in your photo. The fact you're monitor turns on would make me think your power supply is fine. You really need to buy a multimeter regardless, as you can't really own an arcade machine and not be aware of your voltages :o , as every game is different and will require adjustments.

After testing the power output at the PSU, then test it on the GoldenAxe board. If its dead at that point, try and get your hands on another jamma board, is the Seller still available to assist ?

I had a friend come over with a multimeter, nothing coming out of the power supply. Monitor is separate from the pal power supply. That's why it is on.
