Losing money by working

My husband might have an offer of a part time job after a promising interview. Its for 3 days a week for now but should materialize to full time down the line. At the moment he receives unemployment assistance for himself, a dependant adult (me) & 2 children. We are also receiving rent allowance. He really wants to work so the chance of full time employment is an excellent opportunity. The only thing is from what ive been able to work out from citizens advice website, he will be getting less money for working. I used the ready reckoner tool & it says we would be 17 euro a week better off he stays unemployed (not factoring in petrol costs of about 60 euro a week extra). This is just crazy. As it is we just about get by so to be down 77 euro a week for him to work is insane. As we have 2 small children childcare costs would exceed a 2nd income if i got a job. We've been talking about him trying to get 2 jobs but he would probably end up paying through the nose in tax? As he is unemployed 3 years would he have used up his stamps already? He may not even be able to work part time?
