ECU trouble

    Driving a 2001 diesel bora.

Car recently started to lose power about 20 minutes driving or whenever it would seem to get to temperature.

Thought it was a crankshaft sensor turns out not to be that.

Brought it to a garage they had it for a day and said looks like ecu damage it's not even reading when plugged in. Was told to contact insurance etc etc but I inspected under the bonnet and saw a slit on the washer line for the windscreen and a bit of water gathered around the bulk head. So a wet ecu is what seems to be the issue.

I've heard of a few things that can be done but can anyone help I don't have a massive budget and sorta need my car for work :/

Thanks for reading and any help it's much appreciated!

I'd be inclined to go for a second opinion, maybe try a different scan tool.

If the ecu is wet, try removing it, open it up and leave it to dry out somewhere warm.

If the is no communication with it the first port of call would be to check powers and grounds.

Is there communication with other modules on the car abs, airbags, etc.

There,s a lot of things will cause reduced power besides ecu faults so a second opinion would be my first thing to try.

If give your location and someone may be able to suggest a garage.

Check the fuse to the Ecu port, happened my 01 bora before also could be down on power due to loose/broken piping at the air intake.

I brought it to a friend who's a mechanic a week ago (before bringing it to this garage) he took out the ecu took it apart and hair dryer / hot press for a night..the car drove excellent for about eight hours it started raining heavy and it died outside a garage near my house in Ballybrit Galway..that's why I brought it to that garage as my friend just doesn't have the time also. Could it be the port where the ecu clip possibly :/

Airbags abs are still working yes.

Just on the fuse box on the drivers side?

Air intake wouldn't shut the car down though would it I don't think :/ new mass air flow sensor in about a month ago too if that's any difference

Bear in mind that a 2001 diesel will not be OBD-compliant, so you won't get sense out of it without proprietary manufacturer diagnostics.

It was plugged in by my Friend about six months ago when the car was bought and codes came up with the two tools he used and now neither him or the garage it was brought too said no codes were coming up

Pity it still can't be diagnosed with a core problem for certain

I can plug it in to vcds for you next week. I'm away for the weekend tomorrow. Might shed more light on it.

Make sure water can drain freelly from the gutter below the windscreen down into the wheel arches. They holes at either end of the gutter can get blocked up with leaves and crap.

Nonsense, of course it can be diagnosed accurately. It just takes the correct people with the correct knowledge and equipment and a little time and patience
