Just wondering how are some pubs and clubs in Dublin city centre are able to sell cheap drinks on off peak days for 3 euro or less but if you go into the same place on the weekend you will be paying 5 euro or more for a pint.

Does this mean that when they are not doing special offers on drink that they are ripping people off ?

They're not doing anything illegal, if that's what you mean. If you don't like their prices, drink somewhere else.

I know there not doing anything illegal but publicans are always complaining that the pub business is on its knees if they want more people to visit pubs than why cant they do cheap drink all the time ? if they did pubs would not be empty during the week.

I think the pub business is a victim of its own greed.

Chip shops do the same thing. It's just to attract more business at their less busier periods.

Because they wouldn't make enough money to stay in business that way.

Supply & demand. If the pub was empty mid week they make nothing, so better to have somebody there. Also not everybody avails of the offers in pubs or takeaways, some are paying full whack.

It attracts punters in which in turn attracts more in who just like to see a busy place, be it a pub or takeaway. I do not like going into empty chippers I like to see they have a good turnover of stock/food.

Restaurant early birds are the same idea. Hotels seasonal prices too.

The GP on a pint at 3 euro would be somewhere around the 12-15% mark. Which is tiny, but since they are paying rent anyway, and are paying for everything else that goes with owning a pub, you might as well pay a single staff member to work and try to make enough money to cover costs. Rather than being closed until 7 o clock.

If the pub does food, then that's where the profit is, the drink is to get them into the building hoping they'll eat.
