I am going into transition year next year and wondering about work experience in ATM , I really am fascinated by aviation . I would love to find out is the job suitable for me as I am aware there are high stress levels involved . Has anyone ever heard of anyone getting work experience with air traffic control?

What part of Ireland are you in.?

Try nearest Airport or Irish Aviation Authority

Knock is closer. You might get a better chance working there than Shannon if I'm honest.

I would say Shannon's ATC is a lot more vast than Knock's. Although the short journey is always a plus . I will email the and see whats up! Will get back to you guys soon!

Knock might be a better option than Shannon simply because it's a whole lot less busy. just having controllers in the tower. But the obvious one is Sligo. Why not contact them? With a less busy tower you can take in a lot more and the controller will have more time to explain things.

Shannon ATC has students on work experience all the time. Not entirely sure how they go about getting in but I'm assuming an email to IAA's HR department is a good place to start. The students typically spend a couple of days in the operations centre in Ballycasey, Shannon. I think they get down to the tower as well for a day to see Approach, Tower and Ground operations.
As you say, it's a long way from Sligo but in reality, if you want to see some action it's the place to go. You'll get the whole picture (enroute centre as well as airport movements).
    Hope this helps

I would but it would'nt be the normal experience that I would hope to encounter in the future. Sligo is a small regional airport that is probably fairly quiet. But I like the sound of the controller being able to explain and stuff! And of course there would be a significant difference in the dad to day journey.

Of course it is but I wouldn't dismiss it so lightly. It's still ATC and the controllers are fully qualified. By all means try to get to Shannon or indeed Dublin. But failing that what alternative is there?

Well obviously Knock has airliners and is busier. I'd definitely contact them if I were you. Contact all of them! Good luck.

hi. im from Cork and i am also in Transition Year.

I went to Cork ATC for my Ty Work Experience. They let me up in the tower with the controllers. It was a great experience.

I didnt know anyone in the ATC. I just rang the Cork Atc manager and asked.

I think he meant to post that in this thread:

Or BP actually owns all Western ATCs and is going to sell it on adverts to TY students :p
