Hi all, what's the best method/equipment to rent/buy to convert old negatives and slides to digital?

Also there would be alot of old photographs that I would like to digitize, whats the best method of doing this? The photos would be of varying size and shape from the 50's all the way to the early 2000's.

On a side note there are some home movies on film reel, can anyone recommend someone who would convert these?

    Thanks for the help

The Epson V500 is an excellent scanner for negatives and as it has been replaced with newer models you can now pick up the 500 for a decent price.

On the other hand a photographer friend of mine runs a service for doing just want you need, he is based in Dublin but will receive from and post back to anywhere. His work is top quality. PM me if you'd like his details.

They're very poor, not even worth the few quid you'd spend on them.

hmmm best price I can find for the v500 is ~200 or more, for a one time usage it might be a bit pricey.

Anyone know if I could maybe rent one for a week or so?

doing 2000 scans will chances take you more than a week, and if you work full time i would suggest it will take you a month of evenings and weekends

I have boxes of negatives filed of pictures (memories} of the kids when they were young and the photos are long gone, many of the best into a giant family mural now fading and would love to see again probably just as a slideshow on the computer or TV but not to print to any size.
I have tried scanning negatives on my Epsom Flatbed Scanner but not with very good results.
I have thought about buying one of these but worried about the quality

There has been a number of Epson V500 scanners on Adverts recently, they were selling for around €130 which is a good price for an excellent scanner. The V500 comes with negative carriages for 35mm and 120 film, you can quite easily adapt them for 110 film also. They are quick and do multiple scans with excellent results.

Don't waste your money on the type of scanner that Aldi are selling, they are extremely slow and the results are not great.

Once you have them scanned, sell on the scanner, recoup the money.

I've an Epson V500. Can't fault it. I've scanned thousands of images on it and its saved me the purchase cost of the scanner many times over.
