Saorview Query

    Hi,

I recently ditched SKY and decided to go down the free to air/Saorview route. The tv upstairs has a built in Saorview tuner so I just bought a (black square) Technika indoor earlier from Tesco and it works a treat. Excellent reception.

However, using the very same indoor earlier I can not pick up any of the Saorview channels on the tv downstairs. I'm using an Arivia 150 combi-box with this tv and when I try to scan for Saorview channels none are found and I'm getting a message saying that signal strength is only 35% and quality is even less (10% I think).

Is it unusual that I'm receiving the channels upstairs but not downstairs? (I'm in the Lucan area by the way). Is it worth me buying a different indoor aerial to try it out? Or is it likely I'll need an outdoor aerial (which I was hoping to avoid)?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    DEREK.

Not unusual. Signal strength/quality can vary from room to room or even within the same room.

You could test other indoor aerials but no one will be able to advise which is suitable for your specific location. 2RN/RTÉNL advise the use of an external aerial.

An attic aerial might work in Lucan.
RTÉNL does not recommend the use of indoor portable aerials. They are too susceptible to localised physical and electrical interference. Terrestrial transmission of television, analogue and digital, is designed and built around rooftop reception.

It will be possible for over 50% of the population to receive SAORVIEW with an indoor portable aerial. However on a house to house basis there are many factors than impact on the effectiveness of a portable aerial. For example the orientation of your house, the location of the television in the house, the construction materials, the insulation materials, the proximity to neighbouring houses, walls and obstructions will all impact reception.

An outdoor aerial, positioned as high as possible, pointing towards the appropriate transmission site, with no local obstructions is recommended and will give the best results.

Thanks for the reply. I might try a different type of indoor aerial before heading down the outdoor aerial route. Is there any particular type of aerial I should be buying? Am clueless about these things.

Was going to try this one (as I think I saw somebody recommending it elsewhere):

You'd probably get something similar in your local €2 shop. It is very unlikely that you would get a dramatic improvement in signal with an indoor aerial downstairs. As The Cush already mentioned, an attic install may be a simple solution if you don't want an outdoor aerial.

The only way to know how well it works for you is to test it with your TV.
