3rd Party Battery Grips

I've decided I need a battery grip for my D90 for ergonomic reasons (I shoot 90% in portrait orientation).

Is there any real difference between 3rd Party and OEM. I see a 2nd hand (or possibly A stock) Nikon grip in Berminghams for €109 but a 3rd party on ebay is only half of that and claims all the same features.

This is one of the few things I find that it's so much safer to get Name Brands.

I got a Phottix Battery Grip for my D700 a few years back. I used it for a while without any issues, but then I was down shooting Florence & The Machine in the Phoenix Park and it kept forcing the shutter open at random intervals between shots. I took it off and the camera has had no issue since. I even used the thing without a battery, just for orientation and the spare shutter release, but it still kept jamming.

I remember people here saying there's a voltage issue or something that means the batteries are the main issue.

I'd endorse 3rd party flashes, triggers and lenses in a heartbeat, but Battery Grips are one of the few things I'd be weary about not using the camera's own brand.

we have a 3rd party one on our D90, something very similar to this

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/NEEWER-Battery-MB-D80-EN-EL3e-Batteries/dp/B005HM1NZM/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&qid=1394454933&sr=8-18&keywords=d90+battery+grip

Its been running perfectly for a few years now. We had ONE minor mishap where it was loose but that wasn't any fault of the unit itself.

Got additional batteries with it and have never noticed any difference between the lifespan on the 3rd party and Nikon branded batteries.

I popped into Berminghams at lunchtime and picked up the Nikon grip at a reduced price of €69.

Pleased enough with that given the peace of mind of the OEM product, and as I didn't have my camera with me they put together a D90 kit for me so I could test it was in full working order.
