Hi folks, I'm looking to change my wife's car and she's keen on either an 08/09 Mondeo or 08/09 Avensis... both diesel as she drives over 60 miles per day.
Have you guys any advice as to which is the better option? There seems to be a fair few of each around and within similar budgets(7/8/9k), are there any versions to avoid?
The main thing she wants is loads of space in the rear seats and boot for kids stuff.....more interesting stuff like car performance etc doesn't really matter to her, so long as it handles well and drives comfortable then she'll be happy.
I'd also shown her a Mazda 3, Saab 93, Volvo S40...but she seemed to like the 2 above....any thoughts?

    60 x 6 x 52 = 18720 miles per annum. It's about average.

Mondeo is a generally good motor. TDCI engine is responsive and if you can try and higher your spec to Ghia or there abouts.

Avensis is a generally good motor but a bit "blander" Avoid the 2.2 if you can and she is chain driven so you've cut out Timing belt changes etc.

Thanks for the info...I didn't realise the Avensis did not need a timing belt change, good to know. I'd prefer the mondeo myself all right, is the extra spend on the titanium spec worth it? How do the cars compare space wise, similar enough?

I think thats a bit above average. 19000 odd miles is about 30,000km per year.

If you go for the mondeo avoid the lx model and go for a zetec or better.

Regarding the spec side of things, don't touch the lx spec. Zetec is the most popular spec around, which has decent enough toys inside. Titanium has a good few extras alright, but nothing extra over the zetec that you can't survive without. With the 08/09 era, the price gap between the specs will be starting to narrow. If you like your cars and want lots of toys such as heated seats, convers+ computer system, upgraded radio and chrome flashy bits then the titanium/titanium X spec is worth it, otherwise put the savings on keeping the tank full! :)
Edit: If you want lots of room for kids stuff, it would be foolish not to go for a hatch, very practical for kids needs.
