What do I need?

Ok so I'm new to detailing but wanted to give it a try. And as Mothers Day is coming I wanna give my mother 7 years old Yaris (don't ask!) a good once over. It's only ever had automatic car washes throughout it's life so I reckon with a bit of elbow grease I can really spark some new life into this car.

I've been doing a bit of reading on here and other sites and gather what I'll need to do is
    -Wash and dry it
-Apply a clay bar with lubricant and wipe of with a microfiber
    -apply wax and polish off

I read on a site that to get a showroom finish I should double wax, using a synthetic wax first and then later with a carnauba wax. I'd be keen to try for that.
So without breaking the bank I'm hoping people could recommend some products, I'm going to need some sort of tyre restorer and also something to uplift the dashboard and glass. I haven't a clue what might be a good synthetic wax- any advice; colour of the Yaris is silver.

I see halfords have 3 for 2 on a lot of car detailing products, are they usually any good ?

Really depends on your budget as to where you want to go with it!
To do a reasonable job you'd need the following....

    Shampoo
    Wash Mitt
    Drying Towel
    De-Tar
    Clay & Lubricant
    Polish
Wax or Sealant - LSP; Last Stage Protection
    Tyre Shine
    Dash Dressing

Some of that you might have already. Some of the items in Halfords might be OK for doing some of the jobs...off the top of my head, some of the items that might be worth picking up....
Autoglym Super Resin Polish - good a reviving the colour in the paintwork and hiding any defects in the paint
Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection - this would be your LSP, which is applied over the SRP to keep it locked in
Autoglym Fast Glass - good glass cleaner
    Meguiar's Clay Kit
    Meguiar's Endurance Gel
    Meguiar's Wash Mitt

Thanks for the info Curran, much appreciated.

Just a few q's- the de-tar- is this just for the tyres and wheel arches or does tar get everywhere on the bodywork ? Would you consider it essential ? I don't have any products yet as I own a motorbike myself so I'm trying to keep costs down if at all possible. I saw microfiber cloths and mitts in one of the euro shops so must get them there rather than in Halfords. I reckon I'll go for the Autoglym and Megulars clay and a few other things to take advantage of their current 3 for 2 offer. What is the gel used for ? Also can you recommend a shampoo and dash dresser ? The car is used for dogs so I reckon I need something heavy duty.

Yes, you will definitely need a de-tar product.
The Endurance Gel is a tyre dressing.
Meguiar's Gold Class shampoo is pretty good.
Meguiars' Ultimate Protectant Dash & Trim Restore - is probably decent, though never used it myself.
