So AH, I was reading some posts in the other thread about college in Ireland and it got me wondering if all subjects are worthy of study or should we put some to the side.

Are subjects like history, philosophy, classics, etc relevant anymore or should we concentrate on business,I.T and science in future?

They could throw Irish to the way side, not the biggest language in Germany.

The problem is, universities have become businesses rather than cornerstones of academic progress, so those subjects seem alien, because the goal of a university is no longer to learn and explore ways of thinking so much as it is getting a piece of paper that gets you a job that gets you money.

The world would be a very odd place if people exclusively studied business, IT and science... You need people thinking differently about things and coming from different angles.

A large problem with universities in Ireland, is people see them as a place to go to get a qualification to get a job.

It should be about shaping a person. Getting a well-rounded education and developing as a person as a whole.

Subjects like history, philosophy and ethics allow a person to understand the world better. Its what education used to be about. Its about the journey rather than the destination in my opinion.

I do find myself constantly wondering what ill do AFTER college more than enjoying it for what it is. Its hard to strike a balance.
