I need another bike (and advice)

I’m hoping some people on here have resolved the same problem I’m now dealing with.
I currently cycle approx 125km a week for my commute on my trek 1.5.
Over the last couple of years, there have been days, sometimes a week or two when I’ve my bike has been out of action, waiting for parts etc. and I have to get the bus/train/Luas.
As I’m now waiting to replace my front derailleur, it looks like I’ll be on the luas for the next couple of days, and this has led me to the realisation, I need another bike.

I need a bike that can take mudguards, is lightish and doesn’t cost the earth (which rules out the planet-x kaffenbach).

What I was thinking was, to buy a Ribble frame & fork (probably the steel 525), and transfer the 9-speed Tiagra components over to the new frame, get second hand bars & saddle, and this would become my commuter bike.
I would then get 105 components for the trek frame, and it would become my weekend bike (and a stand in for the commuter when it is being repaired/serviced).
The advantage of this, as I see it, is that I don’t have to fork out a large amount in one go, and can pick away over the course of the next 3 or so months.

Has anyone else done this? Is it a crazy way of doing it, or is there a better way?
    Any advice welcome.
