hissing coming from inside engine block

    well lads im doing up a ferguson tractor I have that whole distributor assembly off the side of the engine and when I turn the starting handle I hear a hissing from inside the engine could this mean compression is escaping from the combustion chamber

    Distributor ?
    starting handle?
    Is it a petrol or TVO engine? What tractor?

    Could be a burned valve. Are spark plugs tight?

    With an older engine, it wouldn't really be unusual to hear some hissing noises when turning the engine slowly by hand, if a valve was just beginning to open for instance.

    Tvo I have the distributor assembly removed and I was turning the engine on the hhandle plus plugs a tight

    agree with that, could it be valve or seat in need of refurbishing.with radiator cap off maybe check for air coming through via blown head gasket, unlikely though,was engine running recently,what kind was it
