I've been looking for a small multi fuel non boiler stove for a while. I'm attracted by the look of enamel stoves but they are about 200euro+ more expensive than a matt black. Why so expensive?

    Answers in the question.

Obviously they have to enamal them. Black is cheap. Enamal is also easy to damage so more care has to be taken and bits replaced.

Thanks. While I can certainly see why they might be a more expensive option I find it hard to understand why they should be quite so much more expensive.

As I'm looking at a 4-5kw stove the "special offer" cost is c. €350-400 - so the enamelling cost is over 50% of the cost of the stove - that seems excessive:(

If you've got kids. Or you're planning on having kids, don't go enamel. It will chip with minor impact.

I remember seeing the enamelling process being done in Waterford Stanley many years ago. The cast iron parts are sprayed with a liquid and then placed in a high temperature oven for some time. When they come out of the oven they have the coloured glass like coating on them. Two people would have operated this system, so between the time it takes, the labour costs, the energy and specialist equipment as well as materials costs could make it a bit expensive to do. Still 50 % does seem a bit excessive.

On top of all of that there are probably problems with faulty enamelling and accidental damage that has to be allowed for in the price. Extra packing for shipping also and I am sure lots of returns from handling during delivery.

Enamel is more expensive because more labour goes into making it. Enamel itself is expensive, it has to be applied to the appliance parts and then baked in an oven. Ordinary matt black stoves just get couple of light coats of high temperature matt paint, cheap as chips!

The enamel looks great but it is extremely easy to chip and crack so hard to justify spending the extra money on it. The cream enamel is prone to discolouration also.
