I went out today for a jog with the better half and she had to pull up after half a k with a pain on the outside of her knee. This pain has been occuring the last few times she has ran but doesnt effect her while walking or any other exercises such as circuit training\boxfit. Shes in a lot of pain since the run. The pain is on the outside of the knee and below but no pain on the leg above the knee.I researched it a bit on the web and it seems to be an IT band problem that she has. Any one have any suggestions as to remedys\stretches to overcome this annoying issue?

You tube 'my it band stretch' the vid with the guy who has his leg on the kitchen counter. Great stretch and worked a dream for me.

I would recommend getting it properly assessed by a Chartered Physio

But if indeed you suspect it to be IT band syndrome.. here is a great article by a Physio

    http://www.running-physio.com/itbs/

I would definitely be investing in a foam roller and taking a rest from running for a week or two first to let symptoms settle

    i) don't look up youtube/internet for problems like this
ii) don't ask unknowns on the interweb what might be wrong
iii) its against the forum charter to give medical advice

I'll break the rule this once. Stop running and get a qualified physio/medical professional to look at it

It doesn't sound like IT band problem from your description but that could be because of the description. Try different shoes and for the love of her body go see somebody who knows what they're doing.

I could make a reasonable case for her problem being caused by a slight dysfunctional movement in her shoulder caused by an under/over development of her pecs or perhaps it's the way that she sleeps at night causes a tightness in her neck which follows the kinetic chain all the way down to the pain in her kneee. She should definitely look for tight hip flexors (cause they seem to cause about 90% of my injuries). Has she had a baby recently because pelvic floor exercises are essential afterwards.

You need somebody who understands how the human body moves to examine and assess her, identify the source of the problem (which may be as simple as the runners that she's wearing) and tell her how to solve it.

if its IT Band problem this will help alot

but an IT band problem is higher up the knee than u described so it could be the LCL ligament or Meniscus

Mod: Little late to the party on this one. This thread is an example of why the forum prohibits medical advice. Pathology does not indicate root cause but merely narrows down the list of possibilities. Alot of well intentioned people are giving advice which may have helped them but they might not have the same root cause of injury and even links provided have some glaring issues.

Best advice that can be (and has been given) is to get it looked at by a professional
