All new born calves that die have to be BVD tested, registered and brought to knackery.
In the first voluntary year of BVD testing I failed to test a dead calf and had to test the cow after to make that year count.

Yeah, ALL calves even aborted ones should be tested. Bring the calf to a knackers yard. It'll cost you €10-15 approx.

Yes, must be tested, same as above I didn't test the calf and had to test the cow. Calf was registered stillborn. 6 months later I got a phone call telling me that I had no BVD result for calf No. IExxxxxx. She told me "If you still have the calf, you can test with a button tag":confused:There wouldn,t be much left after 6 months to take a sample from!

You're not going to get a blue card for a calf registered as dead at birth. Tag the calf as normal and send the ear notch sample to the lab. Bring the calf to the knackers yard and they do the paperwork for you.

They take care of the paperwork and issue you with a duplicate copy.

I find it hard to believe that this is happening in practice. Farmers are tagging already dead Calves then paying for bvd test and disposal?
Farming and farmers most have changed utterly in the last number of years.

Testing and disposal costs approx €13. Can't remember the exact figure but the farmer gets €60 or €80 euro for the beef data and genomics programmes, so more money for doing stuff by the book.

€25 is steep, it's €10 here if you drop the calf in yourself.
