Fixing a s*y dish without damaging my roof

Not sure if this is the right place - mods feel free to move

I have a s*y dish that is attached onto my chimney?the house is a three story so it's fairly high up

The reception went with the storms a few back but as s*y need someone to be here when they call it's only this week it's getting sorted.
    My query is this

Following the storms i lost some ridge tiles which I've had repaired. This involved the hiring of a cherry picker in order to safely get up to roof level. The guy that repaired it -came highly recommended - said in his opinion the tiles were probably damaged by the installation of the dish first day when whoever installed it leant onthe tiles while securing the dish to the chimney.he said its common enough.

How do I ensure the repair to the dish -assume it's just a matter of turning it to pick up the signal again - is done without any further damage to the roof?and how would I check it?

Or do I just suck it up and take my chances :-(
I can't afford all these bills next winter again :-(

AFAIK dishes shouldn't be mounted on chimneys.

Perhaps you should look into wall mounting it, at least the next time it goes out of alignment you won't risk damage to the tiles again.

I have a s*y dish..................... but as s*y need someone to be here
Why do you refer to it as a s*y dish?

In all probability, the S*y repair man will not go up to your 3-storey + chimney on h & s grounds. Putting dishes at that height has been a no no for the past few years. An East or South facing gable would be the preferred option.

This question might be better suited to the Construction forum, given that it's more about roofing.

Thanks guys. To answer a few questions don't think I'm allowed to properly name the company so went for the * in the middle. Maybe I am?
Dudara how do I change location of the post? Or do I just repost a new thread on the construction site?

It was only installed 4yrs ago and it was the guy installing it first day went with that position. I have highlighted the issue of height to them in the phone call and am only assuming all he'll have with him to access the dish is an extendable ladder. Maybe he'll turn up on the day with something else? I don't know.

Can I insist they change the location of the dish during this visit? Does anybody know if this would incur extra charges?

And back to my original question - how do I ensure no further damage is done to my roof?

ETA just realised you moved it already thanks Dudara

My dish moved in both storms lately and I have spent a fortune ringing the company to come out and sort it. The first guy fixed it around 5th January and told me he would be back again if we got another storm as it was too exposed and would move again. I asked him to move it but he refused as the call was not to relocate the dish just fix it. The second time I told them I wanted it moved either down the wall to a sheltered position as it was put in an arkward place first day by the installer. They agreed and it was done when the guy called out. Ask the installer maybe he might be a nice guy and do the right thing. Ring S*y and tell them you want the dish relocated during the service engineers visit.

Hi apologies for hijacking this thread, after storm engineer called to realign dish but walked up V of our roof to the dish, he broke & unsettled mortar and tile, no roof ladder was used. I contacted company involved as water was leaking into bedroom who called out a roofer they use for repair not a contractor (he again didn't use a roof ladder). He resolved the issue by piling on a sealant.

I again contacted the digital tv company re replacement who said sealant was used due to the fact that if one tile was removed this would impact on other tiles in near proximity which would also need to be removed and replaced causing a patch on the roof. (As it turns out these tiles on the roof are no longer available.) This is what was agreed during that call would be done, so same roofer was again called out only to reiterate what he said initially and again sealed up where the cables entered through the roof and left again, no roof ladder used again.

I am unhappy with the outcome as eventually this temporary repair measure now applied by the digital tv company will result in me replacing the tiles and Mortar at some stage, I am unsure of where to go from here.
This situation is now going on weeks now due to unkept appointments for various reasons & with water pouring in the roof when ever it rains, I now won't know if this measure has worked until it rains again.

I've also asked for the dish to be moved at the initial meeting. I was to be contacted the very next day in relation to this but that hasn't happened yet like the OP its attached to the chimney.

Any advice appreciated on where to go from here. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to deal with the company involved as there is no follow through. I've been a customer of theirs for the best part of 15 years & unsure of what to do next. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. Thought as much, have given ample, I feel, opportunity for a satisfactory resolution. I feel a tube of sealant whilst satisfactory for the short term isn't a long term fix.

My issue resolved itself in the end as the guy that came out wouldn't go up on the roof anyway so ended up putting up a new dish on a different wall. Not entirely 100% happy with the way they ran the cable round the house but am happy enough to let it pass.

Amber I'd imagine your issue is more complex and I'd definitely be engaging legal advise as it sounds as if ultimately the entire roof tiles should be replaced?

Thank you for the update on your situation, better off to have moved the dish. I'd be very slow to let anyone up on the roof again as if any damage is done you are in blissful ignorance until water starts to leak in on top of you at 3am in the morning. Thanks again.
