Question on filling out VRT form

Hi I'm purchasing a second hand car (4 years old) from NI and just had a look at 1 of the forms to be filled out for the VRT. I bought the car from a small second hand car dealer who worked from his own house and I noticed on the form that you have to declare if you bought the car from a motor dealer or private owner, now he did give me a receipt with his company name on it so I would assume he would be classed as a motor dealer?

In that case the form also states if the car is purchased from a motor dealer that you have to provide there VAT number and how much VAT was paid. So I'm wondering now if I have to go back to him and get this information and ask him has he paid VAT on this?

Just put down teh total price you paid and hand in a copy of the invoice, they will fill in the other info. The invoice I got for mine didn't have the correct amout of UK VAT on it but the VRT office didn't seem to mind

It's just for their records, I wouldn't worry about it, I don't think they check it up, I would just put unknown for anything you don't know.

Last time I imported a car (one not bought from a dealer) I just scribbled down where I bought it from, the lads name and the price.

Thanks for the reply's, think I will just leave the VAT number blank and the VAT amount blank as well, hopefully they wont make a fuss about it. I didn't know you had to pay VAT on a second hand car from a dealer
