Changing from a golf

    Hi all,

I've posted here before when I was looking for advice when I was getting rid of my little yaris and I am looking to change again

I bought a 2011 mk6 golf 1.6tdi dsg in August last year. I love the car and all that but it occasionally has a bit of trouble starting (had it checked in two garages and nothing showed up) truth be told, I want to get rid of it before something major might happen to go wrong.

Has anyone something different that may be a good buy?

I've a few requirements though, I'd like to come up a few years, it has to be automatic because of a disability, diesel preferably and something that a 21 year old won't look like an eejit in :D Budget would be about 30k including trade in.

A newer Golf , it's a completely new model, sorry for suggesting golf again , but the motoring journalists consensus is that it's the best of the bunch in many respects.

Thanks for the quick reply :) That's no bother at all, it doesn't have to be golf sized tbh, I do love the style of the insignia like this one http://www.adverts.ie/car/opel/insignia/opel-insignia-2013/4850368 But I've no idea what reliability is like in them...

I drove one of those insignias for 10 days (rental) last year, I love the shape of them, after that though I was not impressed, there wasn't a lot of power for the size of the car. It was spacious enough (boot & inside) but it just felt cheapish, big but cheapish. I would never buy nor recommend one based on that rental. but thats just my opinion. If I was getting a car that size/price range I would like an Avensis or an Accord.

Got my new golf 7 last week my third one in a row ! Did consider a Audi A3 sportback but I did a better deal on the golf.

They say the same about every new golf when it comes out, and every golf has issues they don't mention. I think some journalists have rose tinted glasses when it comes to VW.

Why not a 1.6 diesel honda civic?

@noelf 'tis a nice looking bus alright

@TBi I'd only love one, but there is no automatic diesel civics :(

@blindside88 Not to keen on the CC I'm afraid.

@Matthewjohn Nice looking cars alright, wouldn't be a bad buy but don't their residuals fall fairly quick?

Ignoring the diesel preferably bit but how about an Auris Hybrid Luxury? I'm not 100% gone on it's rear styling but it will be more reliable and offer far better performance than a 1.6tdi Golf. It would be fairly fuel efficient too.

Surely if you got your current golf fixed properly you'd feel different?

I drove an insignia recently , I wouldn't buy one , bigger doesn't mean better , especially today the way car sizes have grown. BMW and Audi are doing some great deals on pre reg stuff with finance if you are going that way.

To be fair, it's a poor way to judge a car when it's a rental. They get serious abuse and are always the crappiest model available. In 2010, I had a rental Golf for a week and it was the most disappointing ride I ever had. Sure, it looked ok, but it felt like someone had put a moped engine into it. Zero power and you couldn't even hear the engine note. I drove a 2011 Golf that was owned privately and it just felt like a different car. Not my type of car, but it was much better.

I rent cars a couple of times a year and for the most part, it's just not enjoyable driving them unless you get a cabrio, but there's just no guarantee that even a sports model will feel alive.

Of course like gaming websites and EA games, motoring journos are not in the least bit influenced by VAG's massive advertising spend.:pac:

Have you considered the Seat Leon? Also, try the TSI engine you'll be pleasantly surprised I reckon and no dagdagdag to contend with :)

If you were insisting on spending your full 30k, I'd be test driving this:

OP have you looked at a Toyota Prius, it'd be something different :)

@ Frankielee Not to gone on the styling overall tbh...Not my cuppa tae

@Colm I've brought it to two different VW garages in County Laois and Carlow, neither found anything on the diagnostics. So I'm at a loss really :(

@bazz The Kia is a deadly looking car alright, may find one locally and bring it for a test drive

@ryanf1 It could be a consideration at this early stage :P

@Yawlboy Sorry but imho, those chrome strips are a bit tacky and they're a tad under 40k new. They must loose a serious amount of value after year one :O

@commited I've my eye on this beast on carzone http://www.carzone.ie/search/SEAT/Leon/2.0-TDi-/38713904898339490/advert?channel=CARS I know they are essentially a golf but less bland :P How good is that 1.4tsi in the golf? Oh and I'm one of those weirdos who kinda likes the noise of a diesel (born and raised in the sticks of Co. Carlow haha :D)

@deandean They are an interesting car but I don't think it's for me, thanks anyway :)

Test drive one (a MK3 Prius). I never thought it would be for me until i test drove one. It really impressed me. Would have bought one but the wife, who is the eco friendly half of the household, didn't like the back window on it.

I'd be looking this direction if I were in the market for a 30k-ish hatchback.
150bhp Auto top spec comes in under budget.
    http://www.mazda.ie/cars/all-new-mazda3-hatchback/specs-and-prices/

If as you say it doesn't have to be a hatchback then I'd seek an auto Toyota GT86!

Didn't know a new 3 came out, that's an impressive looking car! May take a trip to the local dealers this evening, see what they're like!
