Any owners of 2007-2009 volvo s80 2.4 here. Just general opinion on them. Always loved the seats in the volvos. Searching on uk autotrader puts the co2 at 169 is this correct?
Would the manual 2.4 be a better than the psa 2.0 litre?
Looking to spend under 10k later in the year when company car goes. The 520d is not to my liking, I still cannot stomach those ugly lights and interior in the BM, not to mention the ticking time bomb engine.

    any opinions?

My main opinion would be to get an auto. I've the older model but I never even look at manuals.

I take it yours is the 163 bhp version. I think the newer 06 plus model is the 185 bhp engine with slighty lower emissions but harder on fuel!

Whats your auto like on Diesel. And are they reliable ish?

    180. I've the old 2.0t petrol. I'd have rather ed the 2.4 petrol but no one here bought them and the diesels were a fair bit more and harder to find a good one at the end of the market I buy from:-)

The D5 / 2.4d engine is generally very reliable - it's been around long enough at this stage that any issues were resolved a while ago.

Took Volvo a while to catch up with the German's for consumption and emissions, but when they did, they leapt ahead. D5 emissions were down to 114g (manual) in the S60 - and that's with 215ps.

Sadly - the 5 Cylinder has now gone from most of the model line up, replaced with a 4 cylinder with lower emissions, and more power. No D5 yet, but the D4 is producing 181bhp with 99g (S60).

The 2.4d / D5 is a better bet than the 2.0 psa unit, but don't dismiss all 2.0d Volvo's - the 2.0d psa unit was replaced by the D3 in 2010, which is the same essential block as the 2.4 unit, but downsized to 2 litres, but keeps 5 cylinders, decent poke and pretty reasonable fuel economy.

Herself has a D5 AWD XC60 from early 2010. Emissions just bring it inside the €750 a year. Fuel consumption isn't great - it's used mainly around town though, and isn't too bad on a long run.

Good to hear. Yea looked at the D4 or now rebadged D3 from 2010 but like everthing elso a bit more pricy. I think the manaul 2008 d5 comes in with annual tax of 570 but im not too sure. Im covering 1000km 95% motorway a week and fancy a decent armchair on wheels.

if the 2.0 litre 4cyl up to 2010, before redesign as a 5cyl - is a psa unit how come its emissions are 151 as opposed to the mondeos 156g(2008 mondeos emissions) Thus drops a tax bracket from 570 to 390 pa.

is this 2.0 litre as reliable as the mondeo or does it suffer with issues unrelated to its ford heritage?

The same engine in different cars can and will have different co2 levels. Thing like weight, aerodynamics, running, tyre size and loads of other things will affect how an engine runs and outputs.

Not usually a good sign that mileage isn't mentioned, but probably worth a call.

Emissions of 189g! 30% VRT :( and pretty pants fuel economy.

That one is a 2.4D rather than a D5 - same block but different power outputs. Think the 2.4 was 163ps (may be 175) with the D5 being 184 at the time. Never driven a 2.4D - probably more than capable, but I'd hold out for the higher power version if you can find one - although I think the D5 auto will be the 34% VRT category.

Strangely, the engine size for the one linked is listed at 2401cc, so €1,080 per year to tax. Most have the engine size as 2400cc (have seen 2399 as well), which would be €1034 per annum. Not a massive difference, but worth checking when looking at them.

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/volvo-s80-d5-geartronix-2007/6084047 worth a look?

Anyone any ideas of the co2 tax on the 2008 2.4 diesels. I presume all 2008 s80's are D5.

    They're leather, aren't they?

Tell me, are they soft or firm? Thinking of getting an S40 but I need firm seats.

Firm but comfy. Always found them good for bad back sufferers.

Seems there are 2 no. 2.4 engines from 07 to 09.
    a 2.4 163bhp. Then the D5 at 185bhp. Both upgraded in late 09 to 175 and 205 bhp respectively.
