As it says on the tin. Win 7 won't even download updates, it just hangs, forever downloading at 0%.

I tried running the Fix It tool and got an error: 8004Fe2C

I have no idea what to try here.

Try turning off your antivirus, reboot and try downloading the updates again. Also, check in the update history to see if there's any failed updates that might be causing the problem

Thanks Joe, I just opted for a system recovery, as nothing on the ms website or anywhere seemed to work. Let's see what happens!

Press windows and R and type services.msc and enter and look and see if Background Intelligent Transfer Service is running.

Ok, system completely recovered. No anti virus or anything. Won't update.

    BITS is running as normal.

    Stop it and restart BITS.

    I did that. No joy.

I had a similar problem with Vista a while back and like you I tried everything and turning off the BITS and turning it on again worked for me, did you try turning off automatic updates.

    Tried it.

Running Fix It created the picture Fix It 1, below.

Trying the suggestion in the prompt, led to Fix It 2

I currently have a clean windows install. No anti virus. No new software (aside from ccleaner from above) I presume windows firewall is on.

Do you have service pack 1 installed, I assume you do?

You could try some of these. https://www.google.ie/#q=windows+update+error+8004Fe2C

If unsuccessful I would reinstall again.

After my third reinstall it is now updating.

    Thanks for your help guys

    I have a related problem, with one particular Windows update that won't install;

Windows .NET Framework 4 Client Profile for Windows 7 - 41 MB

I've even tried removing all the other .NET bits from my installed programmes list to see if this would kick it off the list, but no luck.

    Any other suggestions?

    Have you tried Framework 4.5?

Nope, should I install this from scratch, and then see if the pending update goes away?

Yes that's what I would do.

I had the same issue before. Turned out to be a DNS issue. I changed the DNS servers on the machine to Googles (8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4) and the problem was resolved :)

Was this in a corporate network environment? I'm at home, just a single laptop on UPC broadband.

You could try and run Belarc Advisor to see what updates are missing.

My own home on UPC Broadband repairing a computer for someone, just one of those weird issues that can occur :)

It seems a network problem. Apart from connection issue, check Firewall setting for right adjustment.

Thanks for the feedback, but why would a firewall affect one particular Windows update, and not other windows update or not other network access?

Woah now, it's thinking like that which is the cause of more programmer suicides than anything..
