Selling clothes on eBay

I'm a bit broke ATM and have loads of clothes I don't like/wear so would like to sell them. I'm totally new to selling stuff online...from what I understand, it's free to list clothes on eBay, but eBay take a percentage of the profit? And it's only free if you start the bids at £0?

Does anyone know of any other good sites in the UK/Ireland (am based in the UK) for selling second hand clothes? I've had a look at preloved.co.uk but hardly anyone seems to use it. Most of my stuff is high street, although I have a few more 'upscale' brands like Comptoir des Cottoniers. Any tips/advice greatly appreciated!

I've sold things on eBay in the past and TBH wouldn't recommend it. Listing is free if you start the item at €1.49 or less (not sure what it is in sterling.) If your item sells you pay commission. After this you'll be left with very little. Unless you have something limited edition/highly coveted most clothes will only sell for a couple of pounds each - if they sell at all.

What about something like ASOS Marketplace? I've never used it but as it's all clothing you might have a better shot of hitting your target market.

I've found ebay good for selling things like shoes and bags, but clothing is hard to sell for as much unless it's new or a good brand. With shoes/bags I've started the bidding at around £5 but also offered a buy it now price of anything from £12 to £20 and have been surprised at the people who will pay that rather than risk going to bids. A few times I've often regretted not setting the starting prices higher, as people will clearly pay! Even though ebay takes a cut, if you sell for a good amount it's still a better deal than starting with a free listing at 99p and not getting so high a price.

I sold around 10 items a few months back and made over £160, which I was very happy with considering they were things I got no wear out of! It's always surprising though how an item you think will be popular doesn't go for much, whereas something that you think isn't great sparks a bidding war! Make sure you have a good few photos of everything (and make them look nice- I take mine against a nicely coloured wall in good light, or display shoes etc on a clear table). I generally put a couple of paragraphs in the description and what I have found really works is including styling tips! I usually say something like "these look great with..." or "I'd wear this with..". It shouldn't make a difference, but I figure it has something to do with the popularity of fashion blogs, and that conversational, informal style of promoting and selling products now, as opposed to just dry listings.

Adverts yes; ebay will be harder. I had two brand new Brooks Brothers white shirts for sale recently, retailed at €125 each, didn't get one bid and the reserve price was only a tenner. I currently have a set of designer ties on Adverts and have only had one query (not even a bid mind you).

High street stuff won't sell at all I'm afraid... its mostly vintage / rare / handmade / designer stuff that moves. I bid on ties regularly and while they are second hand and they are all rare and vintage and handmade, they still sell for up to 40 dollars a tie (in fairness some of these ties would've been over a hundred new).

If you've anything in particular like designer sunglasses or a bag, stick them on Adverts. But be prepared for very low offers.

The other option could be to bag them up and bring to one of those places that gives you money per weight of bag. Not sure where any are, there used to be one in Raheny but its closed now.

Or you could do a good deed for the even less worse off and bring the clothes to a charity shop / clothes donation centre.
