I have a mac book pro (bought last year) and would like from time to time be able to send the signal to HDMI port on my TV.

there is no HDMI port on the Mac Book Pro. Seems like a bit of an oversight if you ask me, but I'm sure I could probably plug something into one of the other ports that will do the same thing.

Only thing is I don't know what. I'm reading things like thunderbolt and Mini Display, but they all mean nothing to me.

an Anybody please advise what cable I need to buy.

    many thanks

You could do it wirelessly with an Apple TV:

It just hooks into your HDMI port.

Thunderbolt and MiniDisplayPort connection are the same thing as far as I know.
You can get a cable to go from Thunderbolt to HDMI or you can get an adapter.
