I don't think so, the 17 goes for sure though

    The 14 goes there too.

Only kind of. According to google maps you'd have about half-an-hour walk from the terminus in Kingston Estate to the centre. Unless you're very close to that end of the bus route, it'd probably be quicker and easier to get the 16 into town and get the Luas out to Dundrum.

If the 16 is the only bus that gets you anywhere close to dundrum, either take it and walk the rest of the way or get it to terenure village and then get the 17 from the synagogue or the 14 from rathgar.

Or pick up the 75 from Rathfarnham, which stops outside the centre

    No. 16 to nutgrove avenue/yellow house and then 17, 61, 75.

    44, 61 or 14 from the city

You have to walk down to the crossroads and the through the old village if you get the 17... just in case you're not sure.

If you are able to get the 16 then chances are that you may not be far from the 44, which serves Dundrum from Larkhill estate, thats close to Whitehall via the Drumcondra Road. Alternatively alight the 16 at Camden Street and get the Luas from here to Dundrum or Balally. The 14 is a very long route while the 61 leaves you a short walk away.

Changing to either the 17, 61 or 75 is not advised as both routes leaves you with a long wait, the 17 and 61 especially.

On the surface of it a rather basic question on Public Transportation to one of Irelands largest Shopping Centres or "New" Villages...

Many years back, prior to the commencement of building work,I was part of a group of drivers on a refresher course, during which one of our Managers dropped by on his way to a meeting with the developers.

Well was he Upbeat or what !!! :D

Dublin Bus was to be at the very heart of this new development...It was to be Ground-Zero in Transport Terms, occupying THE prime position and dominating the access arrangements for the Centre as a whole....:)

Its worth referring back to this thread title to allow us to reflect on how our Public Transport reality occasionally differs from Reality generally...

Does the 16 Bus go anywhere near Dundrum Shopping Centre?

What I wonder brought us to the present situation..?

What scale of Urban Planning Proffessionalism saw Dundrum Gardai being forced to deploy members to the perimiter in order to regulate Traffic Movement from single lane peripheral roads into and out of the vast number of Car Parking Spaces within the Centre itself.

This codology continued for several years eventually being restricted to week-ends,before the retirement of the senior Garda involved saw the force see-sense,lose interest and leave the multi-bilionaires to regulate their own traffic.....which of course they don't bother doing at all

As for the "Involvement" of the City's Bus Service at the "Core" of the centre......yea,right Ted....buses crawling around the single lane periphery, stuck along with every other road user as the total lack of roadspace to cater for manouvering forces general traffic to a standstill....every day....designed in to this "Development" it seems from the start.

If it were me...I'd issue proceedings against the entire Crew responsible for this travesty....for simple incompetency...pure n simple...and thats BEFORE we move on to addressing the LUAS issue....;)

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

I know the 14 definately does. Luas will have you there much faster though

Definitely from the city, the 44 is the choice.

I was working the 17/61/75 upon the basis that the OP only has access to the southern end of the 16 and get the first of those three that comes along. Shouldn't be that long to wait for a 75, one every 15-30 minutes in daytime, not that far off the 16 frequency.

It's perfectly possible to plan such a trip, switching at stop 1305 in Rathfarnham using the NTA journey planner app and using the Dublin Bus app when on the move.

Using these tools makes life far easier when travelling around the city.

Possible yes but practical, far less so. It's easier to change in town to a direct bus than an area of the city OP may not be familiar with or to use the Luas.

I must be dreaming then every time I plan a journey using the planner.

I manage to get around reasonably well using it, without any long waits as you suggest there will be.

Good for you if you do; I use them as well to maximum effect.

However, as somebody who uses the 16 a lot, I can assure you that it is not a swift service and it's prone to overcrowding while the 17 is not a predictable bus at all nor is it frequent. To consider crossing town on a 16 only to hop off at Rathfarnham and connect for a inbound 61, 75 or 17 is foolish when there are shorter, more direct and/or quicker ways of getting there, including the Luas.

The 44 is a more direct route to Dundrum plus it may get OP there directly as well as a 16. A 61 from town is also logical; to suggest connecting with a 61 at the other end is lubricous while the 14, again from town, is more frequent than the 75; it too can be caught in town.

In short, don't complicate things for the sake of it. What may work for us may not work for others.

We don't actually know where the OP is coming from, which is a bit of a problem when attempting to give advice. People are assuming it is from the north side. It could equally be from the SCR, Harolds Cross etc., in which case going via Rathfarnham may well be the best option.

As someone who travels every single day on one or more of the 14, 16, 17, 61 and 75, and who frequently switches buses at that precise stop, I think that I might
know whether they work or not, and how long they take.

Quite obviously I would not go that way from the north side, and if I were, I would say switch from the 16 to the LUAS at Camden Street/Harcourt, but, as I say, we don't know where the OP is travelling from.

As I said before - my advice to anyone is to use www.a-b.ie, or the NTA National Journey Planner app, or the Dublin Bus app.

You are a very long way away from the 44 if you're in Rathfarnham, Terenure, SCR, Grange Rd.

I live on the SCR and am very close to the 16 and 17 routes. With the Luas, 14, 44 and 61 a mile away, I can assure you that going via the 16 and a change of bus is not a practical option to get to Dundrum from much of Dublin 6 and 8. Granted, it may well be handier coming from the Knocklyon/Tallaght area to take the 17/75/Inwards 61 but from town this way is going to be the long way.

Just a note - if you are considering changing in town, and you don't want to take a LUAS (maybe you have a bus-only ticket) the stop to aim for is Dolier St - you have the 14, 44 and 61 all at one stop (which the 16 also stops at) guaranteeing you the best range of options.
