Tax on investment and trading gains

Hi, I'm sure this has been asked before but recently I've been interested in investing and trading as a source of income. However, I've not been able to find any straightforward answer for a few basic questions I have about the taxes I have to file on any gains.

    1. Are different types of trading taxed differently? For example, is a Forex trade taxed differently to say and investment in silver or Google.

    2. How much, if any, is tax exempt and how much am I liable for on any gains?

    3. When do I file these gains?

These are just a few questions but they're the most basic ones that come to mind at the moment. If you could either tell me or show me somewhere without all the dressed-up language of the revenue website I'd really appreciate it.
