Had the misfortune of playing against him before. Wasn't the most pleasant day at the office as an openside. :pac:

I saw this piece just now via the OLSC Facebook page about former academy player Ian McKinley. His career was cut short after an eye injury left him half blind but he is back playing courtesy of an experimental set of goggles.

Covered in the Leinster thread. He actually had a full Leinster contract when he had to retire.

A terrible personal tragedy for him. His sight however was still too good to become a referee apparently.....

    And we have a winner......Laie_3.gif

Stevie Wonder would make a better ref than Pearson.

At the end of 2011 myself and my Leinster homies were on the Holyhead cattle train heading for the HEC game against Bath at the Rec, where we ran into the Marys Christmas party en route to Chester. McKinley was in the group and had retired a few months before and a couple of us were chatting with him about his situation.

For a 21yo as he then was, you couldnt meet a more mature, pragmatic and philosphical guy given his circumstances and we felt quite humbled by his outlook. Given all that I am overjoyed but not a bit surprised that he has found a way to make this comeback happen. He is an inspirational lad and if nothing else comes of it I hope he gets a lot of joy and fulfillment from being on the pitch again. Well done Sir.

Yep heard an interview with him a while after he got injured, between him talking about his injury and general fight back etc , I was really moved , really admired him, am delighted now he has found a way back to play again :cool:

It was the cruellest of breaks for him to get a full contract and have to retire at the same time. He really had the potential to be one of our best out halves and had outshaded Ian Madigan in the run up to getting the contract.
