    Hi all,

I am going to sell my 05 Golf TDI and I am looking to move up to a 08 model. I am wondering would you recommend a 08 Audi A3 or VW Golf? I am hoping to spend around €11000 on the car My 05 VW Golf has 185000 Kms so I would expect to get €5000 for my Golf.

The 08 Golf is pretty much the same car as your 05 Golf, they didn't change much until the MkVI arrived in 2009. The A3 is basically a Golf in a fancier dress with a nicer interior, running gear is practically the same as the Golf.

So all 09 Golfs are different in general to the previous years VW Golfs. I would prefer if i bought a Golf to have a different style to the 05 Golf. Do you think it would be worthwhile stretching to buy a new style VW 2009 Golf or an Audi A3 2008 which would prob be almost same price as 2009 Golf.

I'd day OP is looking to upgrade to newer car with lower mileage and lower motor tax.
Nothing wrong with getting exactly the same model.

You have a mark 5 golf that model was from 05-08. The mark 6 is from 09-13. So it would be fairly pointless changing it if you were only going to get the same model golf just with a different number plate. As for is it worth stretching the budget to buy a mk6. Well it never makes financial sense to replace a car that doesn't have any mechanical issues and suits your driving is the right size which I assume it does if your buying the same car. So if you want to change as you would like a newer car then that's great we all do it. But It doesn't make any sense if your doing it for another reason. Just bear in mind that most 09 mk6 golfs were 2.0 tdi while from 2010 on most were 1.6tdi which was a more economical better engine. So you would be better of getting a 2010 onwards.

Okay thanks very much for that help. I won't stretch to a 2010 model, I do like the power of the 1.9TDI although i realise that the 2010 1.6 would obviously be much more economical. I like the Audi A3 although it makes more sense to buy a Golf although realistically I will now have to stretch to a 09 Golf as it is pointless buying a Golf that looks the exact same as my current car. Thanks v much for your help, some food for thought.

Why getting a newer car with lower mileage, and possibly lower motortax be pointless?

As I said if you want to change for the sake of changing that's fine. I often do it. But my point is that the op is looking at selling there car and putting 6k euro with it at least the less than 500 euro a year saving in tax will be along time building to 6k euro. A 05 golf is identical to a 08 golf in everyway. The lower mileage is debatable as the op knows the history of the car they have the 08 car is still 6 years old and could have been driven to within an inch of its life. I'm not trying to put the op off changing their car. I think its great people like their cars and like changing them have an interest in the area. And I'm all the time changing mine so I can't talk. But as much as I change my car I'd be slow to go out and buy the same car same model if the one I had didn't cause any trouble as the newer one easily could.

How about something like this instead of a Golf or A3: http://cars.donedeal.ie/view/6307691 2009 SKODA OCTAVIA 2.0 TDI VRS NEW MODEL

I didn't say there was anything wrong with trading up. My point was that both cars are the exact same as the car the OP currently has so he already knows the pros and cons of the model.

OP, the 2009 to 2013 newer Golf is really just a facelift of the 2004 to 2009 model that you have currently. They made changes to the bodywork and interior along with a more simple rear suspension but in essence it is the same car. Also there is no 1.9 TDi engine in the 2009 to 2013 Golf. The 1.9 TDi was replaced by the 2.0 TDi (110bhp) initially in 2009 and then by the 1.6 TDi in mid 2010. Same engines were introduced in the Audi A3 around the same time.

This is the 2009 to 2013 Golf (known as the Mk VI):

Didn't notice. Only took a quick link from done deal. Meant to just look at the VRS as a possible option.

Both the mk5 and the mk6 have the same independent setup. It's the mk7 that has the more simple semi independent beam setup on the lower spec cars. :)

I recentely Changed from a mark 6 golf bluemotion to a mark 7 golf 1.6 tdi car rolls a bit more through the bends but is perfectely acceptable and comfortable.

I think I read somewhere that the mk5 was costing too much to manufacture, so they introduced the mk6 with easier/cheaper to manufacture parts in order to reduce production costs, hence the reason why it wasn't a full new model.

Does every thread on the motors section have to have someone suggesting a skoda? :O

You could always do something totally left field and suggest an alternative.

A golf match in 2008 mk5 or the newer mk6 2009 will have a better spec

Mk5 one with has full height computer which if you buy a specify bluetooth kit your phone book can come up on computer. Also has multifunction wheel.

Mk6 has front and rear parking sensors and navigation and multifunction wheel.

Is what I said earlier true about the reason for the MK6 change was to save on production costs?

If so is it possible that the mk5 was built with better/more expensive materials?

I'm just saying if be going for these Match models if you were going for a golf again with the budget you have.

Mk6 match also come with Bluetooth and you can get them in 1.6 tdi.

If the mk5 was made of more expensive materials then vw are magicians as the mk6 Imo feel and looks more upmarket both inside and out.

The real cost cutting took place on the current mk7 golf where the independent suspension has been replaced with a cheaper beam setup on the lower spec cars.

The way the mark 5 doors were made was costing vw to much time on the production line hence the mark 6 comming to market early

Well I spoke to my local garage guy and he said that a 09 or 10 Golf would be much better than an 08 Audi as he basically didn't want me to get an Audi A3 as he said they are harder to sell on in the future and the VW Golf is much better in terms of sell on value in a couple of yrs. I kind of want an Audi A3 as jsut like them but he was very pushy on the VW Golf being a better option.
